Full Description
Port d'Addaia on Menorca's north coast
Port d'Addaia is a long, narrow natural inlet on the northeast coast of Menorca, sheltered from the open sea by low headlands and small islands. A quiet marina sits at its inner end, surrounded by pine woods and holiday villages such as Na Macaret and Arenal d'en Castell. Because the inlet is so protected, the water is often calm even when the wind blows elsewhere, which makes it ideal for a first dive.
The dive centre is in the small commercial area of Port d'Addaia, where you check in, try on your equipment and change. If you are wondering how to get to Port d'Addaia, it is about 25 minutes by car from Mahón and 15 minutes from Fornells, with parking close to the marina.
The north Menorca marine reserve
The north Menorca marine reserve was created in 1999 to protect one of the best-preserved stretches of sea in the Balearic Islands. Fishing is limited and some zones are fully protected, so the underwater life has recovered remarkably. Groupers, sea bream, octopus and moray eels shelter among the rocks, and wide meadows of Posidonia sea grass keep the water clear and full of oxygen.
Diving in a marine reserve means you see the Mediterranean as it should be: busy with fish that are curious rather than shy. Is scuba diving in Menorca worth it for beginners? Yes, because the visibility is often excellent and the sea is warm from June to October, so even a short first dive shows you an impressive underwater world.
Your introductory dive step by step
The experience begins on land with a relaxed briefing. Your instructor explains how the equipment works, how to breathe through the regulator, how to equalise the pressure in your ears and the hand signals used underwater. Then you put on the wetsuit, booties, fins, mask, buoyancy jacket and tank, and walk or move into the shallow water to practise.
Once you feel comfortable, you descend slowly with your instructor at your side the whole time, at a shallow depth suited to beginners. With only up to four people per session, the instructor can give each diver personal attention. The dive itself is the highlight, and back at the centre hot showers are waiting for you before you head off.
Best time to dive and practical tips
The best time to visit Menorca for diving is from June to October, when the water reaches 22 to 26 degrees and visibility is at its best. Early summer often brings the clearest water, while September is warm and quieter. The morning sessions at 09:00 and 11:00 usually have the calmest sea.
For safety, you complete a short health questionnaire before diving, and some medical conditions may require a doctor's approval. Do not fly for at least 24 hours after diving, so plan this experience early in your stay. Bring swimwear and a towel; an underwater camera is not included, so bring your own waterproof camera if you would like photos of your first dive.
