Full Description

Casa de Pilatos, a Renaissance palace in Seville

Casa de Pilatos was begun in the late 15th century by the Enríquez de Ribera family and completed by their son Fadrique, who returned from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem full of ideas. The name, meaning Pilate's House, is said to refer to the way the palace echoes the reputed house of Pontius Pilate there. It became the largest private residence in Seville and remains one of the finest examples of Andalusian palace architecture.

Visitors searching for a Casa de Pilatos tour or Casa de Pilatos tickets will find that the ground-floor visit already covers the essentials: the entrance gate, the main patio, the salons, the chapel and the gardens. Plan on about an hour, longer if you love detail.

The patio, statues and glazed tiles

The main courtyard is the heart of the palace. A central fountain, elegant arches with delicate stucco and a lower wall covered in colourful glazed tiles create a tranquil space that seems to change with the light. Around the arcades you find marble busts of Roman emperors, along with sculptures of figures such as Hadrian, Aphrodite and Apollo, collected by the family as symbols of classical learning.

Look closely at the tiles, which are among the richest collections of azulejos in the city, and at the carved plasterwork in the Mudéjar style. Together they explain why Casa de Pilatos is often called a small museum of Seville's architecture.

Chapel, Pretorio and the palace salons

The Chapel of the Flagellation is the oldest part of the palace, with a basket-handle arch that shows the crossover between Christian and Islamic building traditions. The Salón del Pretorio has an intricate coffered ceiling, while other rooms display artwork, ornaments and Renaissance details that show how the Duke of Alcalá and his family lived and collected.

The palace also displays pieces linked to Pallas Pacifera, carved in stone, and traces of Roman antiquity. Your audio guide in English explains the history and the highlights as you go from room to room.

The gardens and planning your visit to Casa de Pilatos

Behind the courtyards lie the gardens, laid out in Renaissance style with fountains, orange trees and shaded corners, ideal for a pause in the heat of the day. The best time to visit Casa de Pilatos is in the morning or in the last hours before closing, when the light is soft and the rooms are quieter. Casa de Pilatos opening hours can change by season, and the last entry from Tuesday to Sunday is at 5:00 PM.

The palace stands in Plaza de Pilatos, in the old town within walking distance of the Alameda and the Santa Cruz quarter. Monday afternoons include a public free-entry slot that draws crowds, so choose another day if you prefer a calm visit. This ticket covers the ground floor only; the upper floor is not included.
