Full Description
Phuket Boat Lagoon and the speedboat ride
The tour begins with a pickup from your hotel lobby between 13:00 and 13:30 and a drive of about 35 minutes to Phuket Boat Lagoon, a sheltered marina on the east coast of the island. Here you receive light local snacks and a safety briefing before boarding the speedboat, while the guide explains the plan for the afternoon and night.
The speedboat ride takes about 30 minutes and crosses the calm, shallow water of Phang Nga Bay, where countless limestone towers rise from the sea. The bay is protected as Ao Phang Nga National Park, and its mangrove forests, sea caves and lagoons make it one of the most spectacular seascapes in Southeast Asia. A Phang Nga speedboat tour is the quickest way to reach the islands, giving you more time on the water and in the canoes.
Panak Island sea caves
Panak Island is a long limestone island in the heart of the bay, its cliffs pierced by caves that can only be reached at certain tides. You board an inflatable sea canoe with a guide and slip through low openings into dark tunnels decorated with stalactites, where bats hang from the ceiling and the only light comes from the entrance behind you.
Inside, the tunnels open onto hidden lagoons ringed by mangroves and sheer walls, where monitor lizards, crab-eating macaques and kingfishers are often seen. The visit lasts about an hour and is the perfect introduction to sea canoeing in Phang Nga: quiet, intimate and close to nature. Bring a waterproof bag for your phone, as a few drops always find their way into the canoe.
Hong Island lagoons
Hong means room in Thai, and Ko Hong owes its name to the hidden lagoons inside the island, open to the sky but enclosed by vertical walls of rock. The only way in is by canoe through narrow sea caves, which is why Hong Island canoeing is considered one of the highlights of any visit to the region.
Once inside, you float in a silent world of green water, hanging plants and mangrove roots, with the sounds of birds echoing from the cliffs. The guide explains how rain and the sea slowly dissolved the limestone to create these chambers over thousands of years. The stop lasts about an hour, and the soft afternoon light makes it ideal for photos. Low and high tides change the route, so the guide chooses the best entrance on the day.
Khao Phing Kan and Ko Tapu
Khao Phing Kan is a small island made of two limestone hills leaning against each other, with a narrow beach between them. From its viewpoint you see Ko Tapu, a slender rock about 20 metres high that seems to stand on its narrow base in the middle of the sea, like a nail pushed into the water. It is the most famous image of the whole bay.
You have about an hour to walk along the paths, take photos of the leaning cliffs and the rock, and browse the small stalls selling shells and pearls. In the late afternoon the crowds of the morning tours have left, which makes the visit more relaxed. If you are wondering whether Khao Phing Kan is worth visiting, the view of Ko Tapu alone makes the stop unforgettable.
Sunset dinner and the glowing plankton
As the sun drops behind the limestone towers, the boat takes you to a local restaurant on the water for a Thai-style set dinner with rice, curry, stir-fried vegetables and fresh fruit. Tell us any dietary needs when booking. The sky turns orange and pink over the bay, and this is the best moment of the day for photos.
After dark, you return to the canoes for the most magical part of the tour. When you move your hand or paddle through the water, tiny plankton release a bright blue-green glow, a natural chemical reaction that lights up each ripple. The glow is strongest on dark nights with a calm sea, but it depends on nature and can vary. The speedboat and van then bring you back to your hotel at around 22:00.
