Full Description

Chott Chahbania salt lake

The journey south begins with pickup from your hotel or guesthouse in Djerba around midday and a drive across the causeway to the mainland. The first stop is Chott Chahbania, a seasonal salt lake in the plains of the south-east, where the ground is covered in a crust of white salt that glitters in the sun and, after rain, reflects the sky like a mirror.

The landscape is vast and silent, a perfect introduction to the desert ahead. Your guide explains how these salt flats form as water evaporates under the intense sun, leaving minerals behind, and how the nomads of the region once crossed them with their caravans. Take time for photos, especially if a thin layer of water creates reflections. Lunch is served on the way, and the 4x4 then climbs into the mountains of the Dahar.

Ksar Hadada

Ksar Hadada is one of the most remarkable ksour of southern Tunisia: a fortified granary where Berber families stored their grain, olive oil and dates in vaulted rooms called ghorfas, stacked in several levels around inner courtyards and reached by narrow outside stairways. Its rounded shapes and earthy colours make it look almost like a sculpture.

Your guide leads you through the courtyards and explains how the ksour protected the harvests of semi-nomadic tribes from raids and drought. Part of the site has been restored, so you can see the structure clearly and climb to the upper levels for views of the village. It is a fascinating window on desert life before modern times and one of the essential stops of any Ksar Hadada tour.

Ksar Ghilane oasis and hot spring

Ksar Ghilane is a small oasis at the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, the great sea of dunes of the Sahara. Palm trees, tamarisks and reeds surround a natural hot spring that rises from deep underground and fills a pool of warm water, a surprising and delightful place to swim after the long drive.

You have time to bathe, relax in the shade of the palms and walk to the first dunes behind the oasis. For thrill-seekers, an optional quad ride across the sand can be booked on site. The best time to visit Ksar Ghilane is from October to April, when days are warm and nights are fresh; in summer the afternoon heat is intense, and the guide plans shaded breaks and fresh water.

Sunset over the Sahara dunes

As the afternoon fades, you head into the dunes to watch the sun go down over the Sahara. The sand changes colour from gold to orange and deep red, and the long shadows of the ridges draw patterns across the landscape. It is one of the most beautiful moments of the trip, and the silence of the desert makes it unforgettable.

Climb a dune for the best view and keep your camera ready, as the light changes quickly. Bring a light jacket, because the temperature drops fast after sunset, especially between October and April. After the sunset, the 4x4 takes you to your desert camp, where your tent awaits. This is the moment many guests describe as the heart of a Sahara sunset and sunrise tour.

A night in a Berber tent and sunrise

Your camp is set among the dunes, with traditional Berber tents furnished with beds and blankets. In the evening you watch the preparation of sand bread, a flat loaf baked under the embers in the nomadic way, before a dinner of local dishes around the camp. A campfire and Bedouin music under a sky full of stars complete the evening.

Wake up early to watch the sunrise over the dunes, a quiet and moving sight as the first light touches the sand. A camel ride at dawn is available as an option. After a traditional breakfast, you drive back north to Djerba via the ancient causeway, arriving at your hotel around midday, about 24 hours after you left.
