Full Description

El Ghriba Synagogue in Erriadh

El Ghriba is one of the oldest synagogues in Africa and the spiritual centre of Djerba's Jewish community, which has lived on the island for more than two thousand years according to local tradition. The present building dates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is famous for its interior: blue and white ceramic tiles, carved wooden ceilings, stained glass and rows of painted arches. Every spring it receives pilgrims from across the world.

Your guide explains the history of the community and its long coexistence with the Muslim population of the island. Visitors are asked to remove their shoes and cover their shoulders, and men may be offered a head covering at the entrance. Bring your passport or ID, as there is a security check. Interior visits are not possible on Saturdays. The stop lasts about 30 minutes and is one of the most moving moments of any Djerba sightseeing tour.

The village of Erriadh

El Ghriba stands on the edge of Erriadh, a quiet village of whitewashed houses with blue doors, palm trees and narrow lanes in the centre of the island. Its traditional architecture, with domed roofs and simple cubic walls, is typical of Djerba, whose settlement pattern was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2023.

In recent years the village has also become known for its open-air murals, painted on the walls of houses and shops by artists from many countries, giving colour to the old streets. Depending on time and traffic, your guide may show you a few of them on the way. Erriadh is also a good place to understand how life on the island was organised around wells, olive groves and small family workshops, and why Djerba is often called the island of dreams.

The souks of Houmt Souk

Houmt Souk, whose name means the market quarter, is the main town of Djerba and its commercial heart for centuries. Its old centre is a maze of covered souks and small squares shaded by trees and arcades, where shops sell pottery from Guellala, woven rugs and blankets, leather slippers, silver jewellery, spices, olive oil and local sweets. Old caravanserais, called fondouks, once housed merchants and their animals and now hold workshops and guesthouses.

You have free time to stroll and shop at your own pace, and your guide gives tips on prices and on the best places to buy. Bargaining is part of the experience in the souks. Near the harbour stands Borj El Kebir, a 15th-century fortress overlooking the sea. If you are planning a Houmt Souk visit, Monday and Thursday are the busiest market days.

A beach stop on the coast of Djerba

The tour ends on the coast, where Djerba's long beaches of fine white sand meet a shallow sea in shades of turquoise and emerald. The east and north-east coasts, around Midoun and the tourist zone, are the most famous, with gentle water ideal for paddling and palm trees along the shore.

Take your time to walk along the sand, take photos or simply relax before returning to your hotel. Bring a towel and swimwear if you would like to swim, as well as sunscreen and a hat. The best time to visit Djerba for the beach is from May to October, while spring and autumn are perfect for sightseeing in mild temperatures. This final stop gives a calm end to the tour and a taste of the island's famous coastline.
