Full Description
Djerba Explore, the island's family park
Djerba Explore is a large cultural and leisure complex on the east of the island, close to Midoun and the tourist zone. Opened in the early 2000s, it brings together under one ticket a crocodile park, a museum of art and heritage and a discovery park on traditional Djerbian life, set among palm trees and whitewashed buildings in the local style. A tall lighthouse-shaped tower marks the entrance and is a good landmark for photos.
The park is open every day of the year, which makes it a useful plan for a hot afternoon, a cloudy day or a break from the beach. With your tickets and transfers arranged, you simply enjoy the visit. Allow at least two hours to see the three parts calmly. If you are looking for things to do in Djerba with kids, Djerba Explore is the classic choice.
The crocodile park
The crocodile park is the most popular part of the complex. A large colony of Nile crocodiles, from small juveniles to huge adults several metres long, lives in pools and sandy banks surrounded by palms and reeds. Walkways and viewing platforms let you watch them safely from above as they bask in the sun, glide through the water or lie motionless with their mouths open.
On some days you can attend a feeding session, when keepers throw food into the pools and the crocodiles leap out of the water in a spectacular display; we tell you the schedule on the day. Information panels explain the life of these ancient reptiles, and children can sometimes take a photo with a baby crocodile under the keepers' supervision. It is a fun and educational stop for all ages.
The museum of Arab and Tunisian art
The museum holds a rich collection of art and objects from across the Arab and Islamic world, covering many centuries: fine ceramics and tiles, illuminated manuscripts and calligraphy, carved wood, metalwork, jewellery, embroidered costumes and textiles. Displays are arranged by theme and period, so you can follow the development of styles from the Mashreq to the Maghreb and Andalusia.
Rooms dedicated to Tunisian heritage present traditional wedding dress, Berber silver jewellery and objects of daily life from different regions of the country. The building itself, with its domes, arches and inner courtyards, is a pleasure to walk through. Allow about 45 minutes here. It is a calm, air-conditioned visit, a nice contrast to the crocodile pools and a highlight for anyone interested in Islamic art and culture.
The Djerba heritage village
The discovery park recreates the traditional architecture and crafts of Djerba in a small open-air village. You walk through a menzel, the typical island farmhouse with its whitewashed walls, small domes and inner courtyard, as well as workshops where weaving, pottery and olive oil production were carried out. Models and displays explain how families lived, collected rainwater and farmed the land.
It is a good introduction to the island's culture and to the settlement pattern recognised by UNESCO in 2023. After your visit, you can relax in the shaded paths, browse the craft shops and enjoy a drink at the café before our driver takes you back to your hotel. The morning departure at 10:00 is cooler, while the afternoon visit at 15:00 offers softer light for photos.
