Full Description
From Djerba to the Dahar mountains
The day starts early, with pickup from your hotel in Midoun or the tourist zone at around 06:00. The 4x4 crosses from the island to the mainland along the ancient causeway of El Kantara, a road first built in Roman times across the shallow sea, then heads south through olive groves and small towns towards the Dahar, the range of low mountains and plateaus that runs through the south-east of Tunisia.
After a breakfast stop on the way, the landscape changes quickly: flat-topped hills, dry riverbeds and villages built in the same ochre stone as the mountains. Your guide explains how the Berber communities of the south adapted to this harsh land, building fortified granaries to protect their harvests and houses dug into the rock to stay cool in summer. This drive is why a Tataouine tour from Djerba is so different from a day on the coast.
Ksar Hadada
Ksar Hadada is one of the most famous ksour of southern Tunisia. A ksar is a fortified granary: a cluster of vaulted rooms called ghorfas, stacked two or three levels high around courtyards, where families and tribes stored grain, olive oil and dates safely behind thick walls. Narrow stairways climb the façades to the upper storeys.
The site, partly restored, gives a vivid picture of how life was organised in the region before modern times. Walking through its courtyards you see the rough plastered walls, the small wooden doors and the rounded roofs that give the ksour their unusual, almost sculptural shape. The visit lasts about 35 minutes with your guide, and the morning light makes it a wonderful place for photos. It is a highlight for anyone curious about the Ksar Hadada and the architecture of the south.
Guermessa, the cave village
Guermessa is an old Berber village spread along the slopes and crest of a mountain ridge, with houses carved directly into the rock and a ruined ksar watching over the valley from the summit. Most families moved down to the new village in the plain decades ago, but the old troglodyte houses remain, their entrances lined up along the hillside like windows in a cliff.
From the viewpoint, the panorama sweeps over the valley, the plateaus and the distant desert. Your guide explains how these cave dwellings stayed cool in summer and warm in winter, and how the community lived from olives, barley and sheep. The stop lasts about 30 minutes and is a peaceful contrast to the busier sites of the region, ideal for discovering the troglodyte villages of the Tataouine area.
Ksar Ghilane oasis and hot spring
Ksar Ghilane is the southernmost oasis of the region, a green island of palm trees at the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental, the immense sea of dunes that stretches into the Sahara. The drive there follows the old Roman road across a stony desert plateau, and the first sight of the palms against the golden sand is unforgettable.
The heart of the oasis is a natural hot spring that feeds a pool of warm water surrounded by palms, where you can swim and relax after the drive, so bring swimwear and a towel. You have about three hours here, including lunch at a traditional restaurant with local dishes. The best time to visit Ksar Ghilane is from October to April, when the days are pleasant; in summer the desert heat is intense in the afternoon.
The dunes and the Roman fort
Beyond the palms, the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental begin, rising in soft golden waves. You can walk up the nearest dunes for a view over the oasis, or choose an optional camel ride or quad ride, paid on site, to go further into the sand. A popular destination is the ruins of a small Roman fort that once guarded this frontier of the empire, standing alone among the dunes a few kilometres from the oasis.
Your guide helps you arrange any optional activity and keeps the group together before the return drive. The journey back to Djerba takes about four hours, with a last look at the mountains of the Dahar in the late afternoon light. For many visitors, this Ksar Ghilane day trip is the most memorable experience of a holiday in Djerba.
