Overview

This Beijing Zoo ticket with Panda House is the easiest way to see giant pandas in the capital without queuing for tickets. We book both entries for you in advance, so you simply scan in at the gate and head straight for the pandas while they are still active in the morning. After the Panda House you are free to explore the rest of the zoo: red pandas, golden snub-nosed monkeys, big cats, elephants and old gardens with willow-lined ponds and Qing-era pavilions. It suits families with children, couples and anyone who loves animals. This is an independent ticket, not a guided tour, so you set the pace; most visitors spend three to four hours. Another option adds the nearby Stone Carving Art Museum.

Full Description

Beijing Zoo: a historic garden zoo in the city centre

Beijing Zoo opened in the last years of the Qing dynasty, when an experimental farm and a small animal collection were laid out west of the old city walls in 1906. It is one of the oldest zoos in China, and the grounds still feel like a classical garden, with willow-lined canals, rockeries, stone bridges and a few elegant buildings from the early twentieth century, including the two-storey Changguan Tower.

The zoo covers a large area in Xicheng District, so it is worth planning your route: head to the Panda House first, then follow the paths to the primates, big cats and elephant areas. Is Beijing Zoo worth visiting if you are not going to Chengdu? For many travellers the answer is yes: it is the most convenient place in northern China to see giant pandas, and it fits easily into half a day.

The Panda House: seeing giant pandas in Beijing

The Panda House is the star of the visit. It has indoor halls with glass viewing windows and outdoor yards with climbing frames, grass and bamboo, where the pandas spend much of the day eating, napping and rolling about. Pandas are most active in the cooler morning hours and around feeding time, so arriving soon after opening gives you the best chance of seeing them move and play.

Each panda yard has information panels about conservation, breeding and the bamboo forests of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu, where wild pandas still live. Expect crowds at weekends and during Chinese school holidays; on weekdays the viewing areas are calmer. Plan about 45 minutes to one hour here, and come back later in the day if the pandas were sleeping on your first pass.

Red pandas, golden monkeys and other animals

Beyond the giant pandas, the zoo is a good place to meet animals from China's own forests and mountains. Look for red pandas, the small russet tree-climbers with ringed tails, and the golden snub-nosed monkeys with their bright fur and blue faces. Other areas house big cats, Asian elephants, giraffes, zebras, bears, gibbons, birds and reptiles, so there is plenty to keep children curious.

Between the enclosures, shady paths, benches and small lakes make it easy to rest. Snack kiosks are found around the grounds, and for a full meal there are halal (qingzhen) restaurants run by Hui Muslim families in the Xizhimen area just outside. Allow two to three hours for the wider zoo after the Panda House.

Practical visit: opening hours, how to get there and best time

Beijing Zoo opening hours are usually 07:30 to 18:00 from April to October and 07:30 to 17:00 from November to March, with the Panda House and indoor halls closing a little earlier. How to get to Beijing Zoo is simple: take metro Line 4 to Beijing Zoo station; the main gate is right beside the exit on Xizhimen Outer Street.

The best time to visit Beijing Zoo is a weekday morning in spring or autumn, when the pandas are lively and the weather is mild; summer afternoons are hot and the animals rest. If you choose the option with the Stone Carving Art Museum, you also visit the Five Pagoda Temple behind the zoo, a fifteenth-century Ming building whose five small towers stand on one carved stone base.
