Full Description

Ijen Crater and its turquoise acid lake

Ijen is a volcanic complex in the Banyuwangi region at the eastern end of Java, and its crater holds a lake about a kilometre wide that is among the largest acidic crater lakes on Earth. At sunrise the water turns a striking milky turquoise beneath the cliffs of the rim, and steam rises from the yellow sulphur deposits on the shore.

Many travellers ask, is the Ijen crater hike worth it? Most say yes. The trail climbs about three kilometres from the Paltuding trailhead to the rim at roughly 2,400 metres, taking one to two hours at a steady pace. Bring warm clothes, because it is cold at the top before dawn, and expect the views over the surrounding peaks to be well worth the early start.

Ijen blue fire

The Ijen blue fire is a natural phenomenon caused by sulphurous gases escaping from cracks in the crater floor at high temperature. They ignite on contact with air and burn with vivid blue flames that seem to flow down the rocks like liquid light. Because the flames are faint in daylight, they can be seen only in the dark, before dawn.

Viewing the blue fire means descending a steep rocky path of around half an hour into the crater, wearing the gas mask provided, and the guide decides on the day whether conditions are safe. The volcano authorities can close the crater when gas levels are high. Blue fire is visible year-round, but clear, dry nights between April and October are best.

Sulphur miners and the hike up Mount Ijen

Ijen is also a working sulphur mine. Miners carry baskets of yellow sulphur weighing several dozen kilograms up the crater wall and down to the weighing station, a hard job that has continued for generations. The guide explains what you see, and you should treat the miners with respect and ask before taking their photographs.

For your own safety you receive a gas mask with respirator and a headlamp, plus a safety kit with first aid and an oxygen tank carried by the team. The hike is not technical but it is steep in places, so a reasonable fitness level is needed. The guide keeps the group together and can set a slower pace if needed.

From Bali by ferry: how the overnight trip works

Travellers often ask how to get to Ijen Crater from Bali. The overland route crosses the Bali Strait by ferry between Gilimanuk and Ketapang, then drives on to the trailhead, so the trip takes roughly 19 hours in our default option, including a return to Bali. Pickup in the afternoon, the ferry and the drive are all arranged for you.

Pickup times vary by area: about 4:30 pm from Kuta, Sanur and Nusa Dua, about 5 pm from Ubud, Seminyak, Canggu and Denpasar, and about 8 pm from Lovina and Pemuteran. You hike after midnight, watch the sunrise, drive back and take the ferry again. If you would rather skip the long journey, the Banyuwangi option starts closer to the volcano.
