Full Description
Masai Mara National Reserve
The Masai Mara National Reserve lies in Narok County in south-western Kenya, about 270 kilometres from Nairobi, and forms the northern end of the Serengeti ecosystem across the Tanzanian border. Its roughly 1,500 square kilometres of rolling grassland, scattered acacia and riverine forest hold one of the highest densities of lions in Africa, along with leopards, cheetahs, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, topi, elands and hyenas. Black rhino are present but shy, so a full Big Five day is a matter of luck. The reserve sits at around 1,500 to 2,000 metres, which keeps mornings cool and the afternoons pleasant.
A Masai Mara safari from Nairobi by road takes five to six hours each way, which is why three days is the shortest comfortable format: one evening drive, one full day and one morning. Our driver-guide reads tracks, follows radio reports and positions the jeep for photographs, and the pop-up roof lets everyone stand. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the Mara rarely disappoints.
The Mara River and the Great Migration
The Mara River winds through the western side of the reserve towards the Serengeti and is the stage for the most famous wildlife event on earth. From roughly July to October, vast columns of wildebeest and zebra arrive from Tanzania and must cross the river, where crocodiles wait in the current and the banks turn to chaos. Outside migration season the river is still worth the drive: large pods of hippos grunt in the pools all year, crocodiles bask on sandbanks and fish eagles call from the fig trees along the bank.
Day two of this safari is planned as a full day so there is time to reach the river and still look for cats on the way back. The best time to visit the Masai Mara for crossings is August and September, but numbers and timing change every year with the rains, so no crossing can be promised. January to March, after the short rains, is quieter, green and excellent for predators and newborn animals.
The Great Rift Valley Viewpoint
About an hour out of Nairobi the road climbs onto the edge of the Great Rift Valley, the vast geological trench running from the Red Sea to Mozambique. We stop at the escarpment viewpoint above Mai Mahiu, where the ground falls away several hundred metres to the valley floor and, on a clear morning, you can see the volcanic cone of Mount Longonot and the plains stretching towards Lake Naivasha. There are small curio stalls here and it is a good place to stretch your legs.
The stop lasts about fifteen to twenty minutes before the descent into the valley and the long run west through Narok, the last town before the reserve. The tarmac ends not far after Narok and the final stretch to the Sekenani gate is rough murram, which is exactly where the 4x4 jeep earns its place over a standard van.
The Tented Camp and Safari Life
You sleep two nights just outside the reserve in a large, private safari tent set on a proper frame, with a real bed, bedding, a mosquito net, and your own toilet and hot shower inside the tent. There is electricity in the evenings to charge cameras and phones, and dinner is served in the camp's dining area. It is simple, clean and genuinely in the bush: you fall asleep to hyenas calling and wake to birdsong before the morning game drive.
Meals on safari are hearty buffets, with a picnic lunch packed for the full day in the reserve; vegetarian and other dietary needs can be arranged if you tell us at booking. Evenings are early, as the day starts at dawn. If you would rather stay in a safari lodge with solid walls, choose the lodge upgrade option on this page; the programme and game drives are the same.
Maasai Culture at the Reserve's Edge
The reserve takes its name from the Maasai people, semi-nomadic cattle herders whose villages and grazing lands ring the park and whose red shukas and beaded jewellery are part of every Mara journey. On the morning of day three, before leaving the Mara, there is the option to visit a Maasai village, where the community welcomes guests with a jumping dance, shows the mud-and-dung homesteads inside the thorn enclosure, explains fire-making and cattle customs and offers beadwork for sale.
The village visit is not included in the default option; it can be booked as the separate option on this page or paid locally on the day, with the money going to the community. It takes about forty-five minutes and is well suited to children. Whether or not you visit, your driver-guide will share how Maasai land and wildlife conservation now work side by side around the reserve.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private safari?
The default option is a small-group safari: you share the 4x4 jeep with up to seven other guests. Two private options on this page give your party its own jeep and driver-guide, flexible start times and pickup from Narok, Naivasha or the Mara airstrips.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
On the group safari the programme is fixed, though the driver-guide adapts each game drive to the sightings of the day. On a private jeep you choose departure time, how long to stay out and which areas to focus on.
How many people are in the vehicle?
The jeep carries a maximum of eight guests, each with a window seat, and the pop-up roof lets everyone stand for photographs.
Is the price per person or per group?
Every option is priced per person, with a reduced rate for children aged three to eight. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option, including the private and lodge versions.
Are the park fees included?
Yes on the default option: the Masai Mara entrance fees for both nights are included, so nothing is paid at the gate. The other group options list the fees as paid on arrival; check the option text before booking.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, from hotels in Nairobi city centre and Westlands near the highway, or from the airport on the morning of day one. Guests staying outside this zone meet us outside the City Market on Muindi Mbingu Street.
What is included?
Transport in a 4x4 safari jeep, an English-speaking driver-guide, two nights in a self-contained tent, all meals from lunch on day one to lunch on day three, game drives as described, bottled water in the vehicle and the park fees. Not included: drinks, the balloon flight, the Maasai village visit and tips.
What is the accommodation like?
A large private tent with a bed, bedding, mosquito net, and an en-suite toilet and hot shower. Evening electricity is available for charging. A safari lodge is available as an upgrade option.
Is the safari suitable for children or reduced mobility?
Children from three years are welcome and usually love it, though the drives are long. The jeep has a high step and the camp paths are unpaved, so guests with reduced mobility should contact us first so we can advise.
When is the best time for a Masai Mara safari?
July to October for the migration and river crossings, January to March for dry weather and newborn animals, and November to December for green scenery with fewer vehicles. The long rains in April and May can make tracks muddy.
What should I bring?
Passport, a soft bag, warm layer for dawn, sun protection, insect repellent, any malaria medication, camera and binoculars, a power bank and some cash for tips and crafts.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option and date in the booking panel and send the request. Our team confirms availability, your pickup point and time on WhatsApp within minutes, and stays reachable throughout the safari.
