Full Description
Maiden's Cove and the Twelve Apostles
The first stop is Maiden's Cove, a small rocky point between Clifton and Camps Bay on the Atlantic seaboard, ten minutes from the city centre. From here you look along the white beaches of Camps Bay to the row of peaks known as the Twelve Apostles, the mountain range that runs south from Table Mountain along the coast. It is one of the best Cape Town viewpoints for a first photograph of the peninsula.
The stop is short, about ten minutes, but it sets the scene for the drive south: the whole Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula is mountains dropping straight into the sea. Early morning is the best time to visit, with the sun behind you and the water still calm, which is why we leave at 08:00 before the beaches fill.
Chapman's Peak Drive
From Hout Bay the road climbs onto Chapman's Peak Drive, nine kilometres carved into the cliffs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek with more than a hundred bends and the sea far below. Built in the early twentieth century and rebuilt with rockfall protection, it is often listed among the most scenic coastal roads in the world, and the toll is included in this tour. Our driver stops at the lookouts over Hout Bay harbour, the Sentinel peak and the long white beach of Noordhoek.
A Chapman's Peak drive from Cape Town is a highlight in itself, and the morning light is ideal for photographs. The road is occasionally closed in strong wind or after heavy rain; when that happens we take the alternative route through the valley and still reach Boulders on time. From Noordhoek the drive continues across the peninsula to the False Bay side and Simon's Town.
Boulders Beach and the African penguins
Boulders Beach lies just south of Simon's Town on the False Bay coast, a series of small sandy coves sheltered by huge granite boulders. An African penguin colony settled here in the early 1980s and the beach is now part of Table Mountain National Park, one of the only places where you can watch these endangered birds from a few metres away. Wooden boardwalks lead to Foxy Beach, where the penguins nest, preen and waddle down to the water.
With about two hours here you have time for both the boardwalks and the beach itself: the sheltered coves are calm and warm enough to swim, and penguins often paddle past swimmers. Boulders Beach opening hours are roughly 08:00 to 17:00 in winter and longer in summer; the entry fee is paid at the gate and is not included. The penguins are protected, so please never touch or feed them, and keep a respectful distance from nests.
Simon's Town and the False Bay coast
Simon's Town, beside Boulders, has been a naval harbour since the eighteenth century, and its main street of Victorian buildings, cafés and small museums faces the bay. If you want a coffee or a snack during your free time, it is a short walk from the beach. False Bay is warmer than the Atlantic side, which is why the penguins, surfers and swimmers prefer it.
On the return we follow the False Bay coast north past Fish Hoek and the fishing harbour at Kalk Bay, where in winter southern right whales are sometimes seen from the road. Is Boulders Beach worth visiting from Cape Town in half a day? Yes, and this tour gives you more time with the penguins than most full-day peninsula tours, which is why families with children choose it.
Boyes Drive and Muizenberg
The last stop is Boyes Drive, a quiet mountain road that climbs above the coastal railway between Kalk Bay and Muizenberg. From its viewpoints you see the full sweep of False Bay, from the Hottentots Holland mountains on the far side to the long surf beach of Muizenberg with its brightly painted beach huts directly below. It is one of the best Cape Town viewpoints that most visitors never find on their own.
Muizenberg is where surfing in South Africa began, and its gentle waves are busy with learners every morning. After about ten minutes of photographs the drive returns over the mountain to the city centre and the Atlantic suburbs, and you are back at your accommodation around 13:00 with the afternoon free for Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch or the Waterfront.
