Full Description

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park: the oldest reserve in Africa

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal was proclaimed in 1895, making it the oldest game reserve in Africa, and it covers around ninety-six thousand hectares of hills, river valleys, grassland and thornveld between the Hluhluwe section in the north and the iMfolozi section in the south. The two were joined by a corridor to form a single Big Five reserve, with rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard all resident, along with cheetah, wild dog, hyena, giraffe, zebra, nyala, kudu, impala and wildebeest.

Is Hluhluwe-iMfolozi worth visiting? It is the classic safari of the KwaZulu-Natal coast, under an hour from St Lucia and less than three hours from Durban, with landscapes more dramatic than the flat bushveld of the north. A Hluhluwe-iMfolozi safari from St Lucia with a ranger lets you see it in a day without a hire car.

White rhino and the story of their rescue

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is the park that saved the southern white rhino. By the end of the nineteenth century the species had been hunted almost to extinction, and the few dozen survivors lived in the iMfolozi valleys. Protected here and bred up over decades, their descendants were later captured and moved to restock reserves across southern Africa and beyond, an operation that made this park the source of most white rhinos alive today. Black rhino are also present, more secretive and found in the thicker bush.

Rhino are seen on most drives, often grazing calmly on the open slopes or wallowing in mud near the rivers, but poaching has made the park's rangers vigilant and the animals wary in places. Your ranger explains the difference between the two species, the conservation work that continues and why no sighting of any animal can be guaranteed.

Elephants, predators and the Hluhluwe hills

The Hluhluwe section is hilly and green, with forest on the slopes and views across the valleys from the roads near the main camp, and it is here that elephant herds are often found in the morning, feeding along the river. Buffalo gather in large herds on the grassland, and giraffe browse the acacias on the ridges. Lions are present across the park and are best found in the early hours, which is why the safari starts so early; leopards are seen occasionally, usually at dawn or dusk.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is also one of the best places in South Africa to see African wild dogs, a rare and endangered predator that ranges widely across the park, and cheetah on the open ground of iMfolozi. The ranger uses radio reports and fresh tracks to decide which section of the park the day should favour.

Bush breakfast, barbecue lunch and the rhythm of a full day

The day is built around meals in the park. After the first hours of game viewing in the cool of the morning, the ranger stops at a picnic site for a bush breakfast with coffee, tea and refreshments, with the valley views as a backdrop. Game viewing continues through the late morning, with the full-day option extending into the afternoon for a traditional South African barbecue lunch and a further drive when the light softens and animals return to the water.

Blankets and bottled water are on board, which matters on a winter morning in an open vehicle. The half-day options follow the same early start and bush breakfast but return to St Lucia around midday. Whichever you choose, the small group of up to nine guests means every seat has a clear view and the ranger can answer every question.

Nyalazi Gate and how to get there from St Lucia

Nyalazi Gate is the park's central entrance on the R618 between the Hluhluwe and iMfolozi sections, about seventy kilometres and roughly an hour from St Lucia village. The tour with pickup leaves your accommodation in St Lucia at 05:00, reaching the gate as it opens, which is the best time for predators and the coolest hours for all game. If you have your own car, the options meeting at Nyalazi Gate at 06:00 start from the gate's car park, where the ranger waits with the open vehicle.

The best time to visit Hluhluwe-iMfolozi is the dry winter from May to September, when grass is short, animals gather at water and mornings are crisp; summer brings lush scenery, newborn animals and hot, humid afternoons. Pair the safari with the hippo cruise and Cape Vidal to round out a stay in St Lucia.
