Full Description
Kruger National Park: the Orpen and Satara region
Kruger National Park is South Africa's largest wildlife reserve, stretching for about 350 kilometres along the border with Mozambique. The central region around Orpen Gate and Satara rest camp is known for its open grassland plains and scattered knobthorn and marula trees, which attract large herds of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and impala, and with them the predators. Lions are often seen here, and cheetahs favour the open ground.
Orpen Gate is the closest Kruger entrance to Hoedspruit, about an hour's drive away, so game drives from your camp reach the park early, when animals are most active. Sightings are never guaranteed, but this region is a favourite of guides for its variety of wildlife and its big skies.
The Panorama Route and the Blyde River Canyon
The Panorama Route follows the edge of the Drakensberg escarpment in Mpumalanga, where the highveld drops dramatically into the Lowveld. Its centrepiece is the Blyde River Canyon, a deep red sandstone gorge clothed in green subtropical vegetation, among the largest canyons on Earth. The Three Rondavels, round rock peaks with grassy tops, rise above the canyon and the dam below.
Along the route you also visit Bourke's Luck Potholes, where swirling water has carved deep cylindrical holes into the rock at the meeting of two rivers, and God's Window, a viewpoint where on clear days you look out across the Lowveld towards Kruger. Waterfalls such as the Lisbon Falls and the town of Graskop are often included. Is the Panorama Route worth it? It is the perfect contrast to the safari days.
Hoedspruit and your private bush camp
Hoedspruit is a small safari town at the foot of the escarpment, surrounded by private reserves and wildlife estates of the Greater Kruger area. Your private bush camp nearby is home for four nights, a peaceful base in the bushveld where you can listen to the night sounds after a day in the park.
Staying in one camp for the whole trip means no daily packing and more time to enjoy the bush. Breakfasts each morning and dinners on three evenings are included, and the guides share stories and plans for the next day around the camp. Lunch on the first and third days is not included, and stops are made where you can buy food.
The guided bush walk
A guided bush walk is a very different way to experience the African wilderness. On foot, accompanied by a qualified guide, you slow down and notice the details you miss from a vehicle: tracks in the sand, dung that tells which animals passed, termite mounds, medicinal plants, insects and birdsong.
The walk is gentle and focused on learning rather than distance, and safety rules are explained before you start. The walk fee is optional and paid locally, so you can decide on the day. It is a highlight for many travellers, who say it gives a deeper understanding of the ecosystem. Wear closed shoes and neutral colours, and bring water and a hat.
Kruger safari from Johannesburg: getting there and the best season
How to get to Kruger from Johannesburg? The drive to Hoedspruit covers roughly 450 to 500 kilometres, about six to seven hours, crossing the highveld of Mpumalanga and descending into the Lowveld. With transfers included in this safari, you avoid the long self-drive and the planning of park entry and accommodation.
The best time to visit Kruger is the dry season from May to September, when the bush is thinner and animals gather near water, while summer from November to March brings green landscapes, baby animals and migrant birds. The Panorama Route is beautiful all year, but mist can hide the views, so the guide may adjust the day. Kruger is in a malaria area, so ask your doctor about precautions.
