Full Description
Cova des Coloms: the Cave of the Doves
Cova des Coloms, the name meaning Cave of the Doves, is a sea cave system on the east coast of Mallorca in the Manacor area, cut into limestone cliffs by the sea over thousands of years. The area is wild and unspoilt, with pine-covered hills, rocky inlets and clear turquoise water that makes the caves glow.
This sea caving tour in Mallorca visits the coast on foot and by swimming, entering the caves through natural arches and passageways. The guide explains how the caves formed, points out the rock formations and keeps the group safe throughout.
The sea caving experience
You wear a wetsuit, helmet, head torch, water shoes and a buoyancy aid, and follow the guide over rocks and through the water into the caves. There are places where you swim, wade and clamber through narrow gaps, and the tour is a real adventure rather than a simple sightseeing trip.
The group is limited to ten participants, which keeps the experience personal and allows the guide to give everyone attention. Sea caving is quite physical, but there is no need to be an expert; a reasonable level of fitness and comfort in water is what you need.
Natural pools and the coastline
Between the caves, you swim in natural rock pools filled with sea water so clear that you can see the bottom several metres down. The mix of light and shadow inside the caves makes for some of the most memorable photographs in Mallorca, though you should not bring valuables.
Ask the guide about the area, because the coast between Porto Cristo and Cala Varques has a lot of hidden coves and wildlife. The best time for a sea caving tour is in the warm season, when the water is more comfortable for longer swims.
Choosing your option: hotel transfer or meeting point
The default option includes hotel pickup and drop-off from a wide range of pickup locations across the island. Choose your location when you book, and your exact time is confirmed afterwards. It is the easiest choice if you do not have a car.
The second option has no transport: you meet the guide in Manacor, on Carrer des Castellot, and continue together to the caves. Both options last around four hours in total for the activity, and both include all caving equipment and insurance. Food and water are not included, so bring your own.
