4.8 (130 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This full-day trip from Moshi combines the three classic things to do around Kilimanjaro in one go: the hike to Materuni Waterfalls on the mountain's southern slopes, a hands-on Chagga coffee experience in Materuni village, and a swim in the turquoise pools of Kikuletwa Hot Springs. The default option travels by tuk-tuk, a breezy, open-sided ride through banana farms; an air-conditioned car, shorter waterfall-only days, a hot-springs-only afternoon and a longer version from Arusha are also on the booking panel. We pick you up at your Moshi accommodation, a local English-speaking guide stays with you all day, and a hot village lunch and mineral water are included. Full Description
Materuni Waterfalls, Kilimanjaro's southern slopes
Materuni Waterfalls is the best-known waterfall near Moshi and the easiest Kilimanjaro day trip from the town. The falls drop roughly ninety metres down a green cliff of the Mware river gorge, inside Materuni village at about one thousand five hundred metres above sea level on the lower slopes of the mountain. The hike to the falls starts in the village and takes around forty to fifty minutes each way on a muddy, sometimes steep path through banana, avocado and coffee farms.
At the bottom you reach a natural plunge pool where you can swim in cold, clean mountain water; the best photos are taken from the boulders on the right bank. Expect about an hour at the falls. The Materuni waterfall hike from Moshi is doable for most reasonably fit people, including children who are used to walking, and our guide sets the pace and lends a hand on the slippery sections. Wear shoes with grip and carry a change of clothes.
Materuni village and the Chagga coffee experience
Materuni is a Chagga village, and the Chagga people have farmed the fertile southern slopes of Kilimanjaro for centuries, growing arabica coffee under the shade of banana trees. The Materuni coffee tour is the cultural heart of the day: with local farmers you pick ripe red cherries, pulp them, roast the beans in a clay pot over an open fire, pound them in a wooden mortar while the villagers sing the traditional coffee song, and finally grind and brew a cup that tastes of the mountain it grew on.
The whole experience lasts about an hour and ends with a hot lunch cooked in the village, usually a Chagga-style plate of banana stew, rice, vegetables and meat or beans. It is a relaxed, friendly stop where guests ask about daily life on the mountain and children are welcome to take part in the pounding. Buying a bag of freshly roasted beans directly from the farmers is the best souvenir of a Moshi coffee tour.
Kikuletwa (Chemka) Hot Springs
Kikuletwa Hot Springs, also called Chemka Hot Springs or Maji Moto, lie in dry savannah near Rundugai village, about forty kilometres south-west of Moshi, roughly an hour's drive from the mountain villages. After the dusty approach road the sight is startling: a pool of glass-clear turquoise water fed by underground springs, shaded by huge fig trees whose roots trail into the water. The water is pleasantly warm rather than hot, which is why a swim at Kikuletwa in the heat of the afternoon is so refreshing.
You usually spend two hours here swimming, floating in the gentle current, jumping from the rope swing and letting the tiny fish nibble at your feet. There are simple changing rooms and a shaded area for resting. The best time to visit Chemka Hot Springs is on a weekday afternoon, when it is quieter than at weekends. Entrance is included in the default option, and the drive back to Moshi arrives in the early evening.
The ride from Moshi: tuk-tuk or car
How to get to Materuni from Moshi is simple with us: the road climbs out of town through Kibosho-style farmland for about fifteen kilometres, and the last stretch to the village is a rough track. The default option uses a tuk-tuk, the three-wheeled taxi of Tanzanian towns, which gives an open, breezy and genuinely local ride with the villages, markets and farms passing at eye level. On a clear morning the snowy summit of Kilimanjaro shows itself above the clouds behind you.
If you prefer more comfort, the same day by air-conditioned car is on the booking panel, as is a full-day version starting in Arusha. The tuk-tuk is fun for couples and small groups travelling light; families with young children or guests who want cooler transport for the hot-springs leg often choose the car. Either way our driver and guide stay with you from pickup to drop-off.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
The standard options are priced per person and run as a small group with a local guide. The record also offers private arrangements, so if you would like the tuk-tuk or car for your party only, tell us on WhatsApp and we will confirm what is available on your date.
How long is the Materuni Waterfalls tour from Moshi?
The default full day with coffee, waterfall, lunch and hot springs takes about ten to eleven hours door to door. The shorter options without the hot springs take about six to seven and a half hours, and the hot-springs-only afternoon about seven hours including the drives.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes. Every option includes pickup and drop-off at your hotel or accommodation in Moshi town; one option starts in Arusha instead. Pickups outside these areas can be arranged on request.
What is included?
Return transport by tuk-tuk (or air-conditioned car on the car options), an English-speaking local guide, the guided coffee experience, the hike to the waterfall, a hot local lunch with mineral water and, on the full-day options, entrance to Kikuletwa Hot Springs. Tips and personal expenses are not included.
How hard is the hike to Materuni Waterfalls?
It is a short hike of about forty to fifty minutes each way on a farm path that is steep and slippery in a few places, with two small stream crossings. Most people of normal fitness manage it easily; a walking stick is offered in the village and our guide helps on the tricky sections.
Can we swim at the waterfall and at the hot springs?
Yes to both. The plunge pool at Materuni is cold mountain water and the swim is short but memorable; Kikuletwa is warm, clear and calm, perfect for a long afternoon swim. Bring swimwear and a towel.
Is the price per person or per group?
All options are priced per person, with a child rate on most of them. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes. Children who are used to walking enjoy the hike, the coffee pounding and the hot springs. For small children we recommend the car option and a parent holding hands on the trail. Life jackets are not provided at the springs, so keep an eye on non-swimmers.
What should I bring?
Swimwear worn under your clothes, a towel, a change of clothes, shoes with grip, sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and a little cash for souvenirs and tips. A waterproof phone pouch is handy at the falls.
When is the best time to visit Materuni and Chemka?
The dry months from June to October and from late December to February give the firmest trails and the best chance of seeing Kilimanjaro's summit in the morning. The falls are fullest after the rains in May and June. Weekday afternoons are quieter at the hot springs.
Can we do the tour from Arusha?
Yes. Choose the Arusha option on the booking panel; it is the same programme with air-conditioned transport from your Arusha hotel and a longer day on the road.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option, date and start time on this page and send the booking. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and agrees the exact pickup time with you the day before.
