Full Description
Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam by fast ferry
The journey begins before dawn at your hotel, where our driver collects you for the seven o'clock ferry from the port in Stone Town. The fast ferry crosses the channel to Dar es Salaam in about one hour and forty minutes, with Zanzibar's low coastline slipping away behind and the skyline of Tanzania's largest city rising ahead. Seats are indoors and air-conditioned, with an open deck for photos. Your passport is needed at the terminal, which is why we ask for a copy a few days before departure so tickets can be issued in your name.
Dar es Salaam, on the mainland opposite Zanzibar, is the country's commercial capital and main port, and the ferry docks a short drive from the new railway station. The ferry to Dar es Salaam from Zanzibar is the first step of this safari and already feels like the start of an adventure.
Dar es Salaam to Morogoro by high-speed train
From the ferry our guide takes you to the standard-gauge railway station for the half past nine train to Morogoro. Tanzania's new electric high-speed line opened in 2024 and covers the roughly two hundred kilometres inland in about one hour and forty-five minutes, with wide windows on coconut groves, sisal estates and the first hills of the interior. It is quiet, air-conditioned and far more comfortable than the road, which is why we built the safari around it.
Morogoro sits at the foot of the Uluguru mountains, a green wall that rises behind the town, and is the gateway to Mikumi. A safari vehicle meets you at the station for the drive of roughly two hours along the main highway south-west, with the first glimpses of baobabs and, as the park boundary approaches, of giraffes and impalas grazing near the road.
Mikumi National Park and the Mkata floodplain
Mikumi is the most accessible savannah park in southern Tanzania and borders Nyerere National Park, the former Selous, so animals move freely between the two. Its heart is the Mkata floodplain, an open grassland dotted with acacia and borassus palms and framed by the Uluguru and Rubeho mountains, where elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and impalas graze in view of the vehicle. Lions are often seen resting under trees; leopards are present but elusive. The Hippo Pool near the gate shows hippos and crocodiles at close range.
Your private full-day game drive on day two leaves after an early breakfast and continues until the afternoon, with a buffet lunch inside the park; because the vehicle is yours, the guide stays as long as you like at each sighting. A Mikumi safari from Zanzibar is the easiest way to see real wildlife from the island, and the best time to visit Mikumi is the dry season from June to October, when the grass is short and animals gather at the water.
Maasai village visit
On the first afternoon, after lunch and a rest, your guide takes you to a Maasai community near the park. The Maasai are pastoralists whose cattle are at the centre of their life, and the visit introduces their homesteads of mud and thatch, the role of cattle, the beadwork made by the women and the songs and jumping dance of the young men. It is a chance to ask questions through your guide and to understand how people live alongside wildlife on the edge of a national park.
The visit lasts about an hour and a half and is respectful and unhurried: you are guests, and photographs are taken with permission. Small purchases of beadwork support the community directly. Afterwards you return to your accommodation near Mikumi for dinner and the first night, with the sounds of the bush around you.
Morogoro and the Uluguru mountains
Morogoro, where you change between train and road, is a regional capital at the foot of the Uluguru mountains, whose forested slopes rise steeply behind the town and catch the rain that feeds the rivers of the plains. The town is known for its agricultural university and busy markets, and the view of the mountains from the station is worth a photo. On the return journey on day three there is often time for a short stop in town before the train.
The return follows the same route in reverse: safari vehicle from Mikumi to Morogoro, the morning train to Dar es Salaam, a transfer to the ferry terminal and the afternoon sailing to Stone Town, where our driver takes you back to your hotel. Having seen the countryside unfold in both directions is part of what makes this overland safari feel richer than a quick flight.
