Full Description
Mikumi National Park, Tanzania's most accessible savannah
Mikumi National Park lies in south-central Tanzania between the Uluguru Mountains and the Udzungwa range, about three hundred kilometres west of Dar es Salaam. It protects roughly three thousand square kilometres of open grassland, acacia woodland and seasonal swamps, and it borders the vast Nyerere National Park to the south, so animals move freely between the two. Because the main road from Dar es Salaam to the south crosses the park, and because it has its own airstrip, Mikumi is the easiest place in Tanzania to see big game in a single day.
A Mikumi safari from Zanzibar makes sense precisely for that reason: the flight from the island takes about an hour, the airstrip is inside the park and the game drive starts minutes after landing. The landscape is often compared to the Serengeti on a smaller scale, with long views across golden grass to the mountains, which makes spotting animals easier than in dense bush.
The Mkata floodplain and its wildlife
The heart of the park is the Mkata floodplain, a wide, flat grassland dotted with baobabs, palms and acacia trees that fills with water in the rains and dries to gold in the dry season. This is where most of the game concentrates: herds of elephants moving between the trees, giraffes browsing the acacias, zebra and wildebeest grazing together, buffalo in large groups, impala, eland, warthogs and sometimes the tall, shy sable antelope. Lions are resident on the plain and are seen on many drives, resting in the shade or watching the herds.
Our driver-guide reads the tracks, the birds and the behaviour of the herds to find the best viewing, and the open-sided or pop-up-roof 4x4 gives everyone a clear view and good photos. Wildlife is wild and sightings are never guaranteed, but the Mkata plain is as reliable as the mainland gets for a one-day safari. Bring binoculars if you have them.
Hippo pools, wetlands and the mountains beyond
A short drive from the park gate, the hippo pools are a classic stop: a group of hippos spends the day half-submerged, snorting and yawning, while crocodiles bask on the banks and water birds work the shallows. Around the seasonal pools and streams the park's birdlife is excellent, with lilac-breasted rollers, hornbills, bateleur eagles, marabou storks and, in the wetter months, flocks of migrants. The far horizon is framed by the Uluguru Mountains to the east and the Rubeho range to the north-west.
Spending time at the pools and the woodland edges is also where the smaller stories of the savannah appear: dwarf mongooses, a monitor lizard on a log, a family of warthogs trotting with tails up. The game drive covers the plain and the pools in a loop of about five to six hours with the lunch break in the middle.
The flight from Zanzibar and the rhythm of the day
The day starts early. Our transfer collects you at your hotel in the small hours and brings you to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar for the early-morning departure. The flight is in a light aircraft and takes about an hour, crossing the Zanzibar channel, the coast and the green plains of the mainland before landing on the airstrip inside Mikumi; the views from the window are part of the experience. You are met at the airstrip by the 4x4 and the driver-guide and the game drive begins straight away.
In the afternoon the same route brings you back: a flight of about an hour to Zanzibar and the transfer to your hotel, arriving in the early evening. How to get to Mikumi from Zanzibar in one day is simply this flight; by road and ferry it would take two days each way. Flight times may shift for weather or operational reasons, and we send the exact pickup time the day before.
Bush lunch and the best time for a Mikumi safari
Around midday the vehicles stop at a shaded spot inside the park for a bush lunch served at set tables, with fresh juices and drinking water, which is also available in the vehicle throughout the day. It is a chance to stretch, talk through the morning's sightings with the guide and take photos of the plain before the afternoon drive. Raincoats are available on board if the weather turns.
The best time to visit Mikumi is the dry season from June to October, when the grass is short, the animals gather at water and the roads are firm; December to February is also good and greener. The long rains of March to May bring lush scenery but muddier tracks and higher grass. The park is open all year, and early morning and late afternoon are the most active hours for wildlife.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private safari?
The default option is shared: the hotel transfer, the flight and the game drive are with other travellers. Two private options give you a 4x4 and driver-guide for your party only inside the park, while the transfer and flight remain shared.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
On the shared game drive the guide plans the route for the whole vehicle. On the private options you choose where to linger and when to stop for photos, within the flight schedule.
How many people are in the safari vehicle?
The shared 4x4 carries a small group with a window seat for everyone. On the private options the vehicle is for your party only, with a minimum of two travellers.
Is the price per person or per group?
All options are priced per person, with a child rate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, the default option includes a shared pickup and drop-off at hotels anywhere in Zanzibar. One option without hotel transfer lets you meet us at the airport instead.
What is included?
Return flights between Zanzibar and Mikumi, the game drive in a 4x4 with an English-speaking driver-guide, bush lunch with fresh juices, drinking water, park entry and landing fees, raincoats if needed and, on the default option, hotel transfers. Tips and the mandatory Zanzibar travel insurance fee are not included.
How long is the day?
About ten hours from hotel pickup to drop-off, including two flights of about an hour each and around six hours in the park.
Is it suitable for children and people with reduced mobility?
Children from two years are welcome and a child rate applies; a full day with early start suits children who travel well. The small aircraft and the rough tracks make it unsuitable for pregnant women, guests with back or heart problems and wheelchair users.
Will we see the Big Five?
Mikumi has elephants, buffalo, lions and occasionally leopards; rhinos are not found here. Sightings depend on the animals and the season and are never guaranteed.
What should I bring?
Passport, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, sunglasses, a light jacket, camera and binoculars, and a small soft bag for the aircraft. Neutral-coloured clothing is best.
When is the best time of year?
June to October is the driest and best for wildlife viewing, with December to February a good green alternative. The long rains of March to May can make tracks muddy and occasionally affect flights.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your option and date in the booking panel and send the request. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the pickup time and flight details the day before the safari.
