Full Description

The coffee slopes of Mount Meru above Arusha

Arusha sits at the foot of Mount Meru, a 4,566-metre volcano whose lower slopes receive enough rain and shade to grow some of Tanzania's best Arabica. The farms we visit are a short drive from the centre of town, on red-earth lanes between banana groves and maize plots, and they belong to families who have picked, dried and sold coffee here for generations. In the dry months the view opens up across the plains and, on a clear morning, as far as Kilimanjaro.

A coffee farm tour from Arusha is a short, relaxed outing rather than a trek: you walk at farm pace between the rows, learn which shrubs are shade-grown and why, and see how a household balances coffee with the food crops that feed the family. It is a good first-day activity after a long flight or a gentle afternoon before a safari departure.

From bean to cup: the coffee experience

The farmer shows you every step. If you come between the main harvests you pick the ripe red cherries yourself, then pulp them to free the beans, which are washed and dried on raised racks in the sun. Dry green beans are roasted in a clay pot over the fire until they crackle and turn brown, pounded in a wooden mortar and finally brewed, so the cup you drink is one you helped make. The whole session takes about ninety minutes and there are local snacks and water on hand.

Guests often ask how coffee from Arusha differs from the Kilimanjaro coffee of Moshi; the answer is the altitude, soil and roasting, and the farmer will happily explain. Freshly roasted beans are sold by the family if you want to take some with you. Children aged ten and under pay a reduced rate and usually love the pounding and the smell of the roast.

The walk to the Mangalia Waterfalls

From the farm a footpath leads through the village and into the forest along a stream to the Mangalia Waterfalls. It is an easy walk of about half an hour each way with a few muddy steps and a short descent to the pool, which our guide takes slowly. The cascade is modest in height but very pretty, tumbling over mossy rock into a cool pool shaded by tall trees and ferns, and in the rainy months it carries much more water.

You can take off your shoes and stand in the water, but the pool is shallow and not meant for swimming. How to get to the Mangalia Waterfalls on your own is not obvious, as the path crosses private farmland, which is why guests come with a local guide who knows the families. Birdlife is good here, so bring a camera or binoculars, and give yourself twenty minutes at the falls before the walk back.

Lake Duluti and the longer options

If you prefer water to waterfalls, the second option follows the coffee farm with a forest walk around Lake Duluti, a small crater lake a few kilometres east of Arusha, and a quiet canoe ride on it. The steep, forested crater walls hold monitor lizards, kingfishers and fish eagles, and the lake is calm enough for beginners to paddle. This version lasts about six hours.

The third option is the longest, about seven hours: coffee farm, a walk through the village to see daily life, a hands-on cooking session where you prepare a local meal with a family and eat it together, and then the Mangalia Waterfalls. It is the best choice for anyone curious about Tanzanian family cooking. The booking panel shows all three options; our team is happy to help you choose.
