Full Description

Tarangire National Park: elephants, baobabs and the river

Tarangire covers about 2,850 square kilometres of savannah, acacia woodland and seasonal swamps around 120 kilometres south-west of Arusha. Its lifeline is the Tarangire River, which keeps flowing through the dry season when everything else is parched, so from June to October the park holds some of the biggest elephant concentrations in Tanzania, with family herds walking to the water in the heat of the day. The other signature is the baobab: enormous, bottle-shaped trees that store water in their trunks and give the landscape a prehistoric look.

A Tarangire day safari from Arusha is the shortest route to a true wildlife day: by late morning you are watching elephants dust-bathing a few metres from the vehicle. Lions are often seen near the river, cheetahs on the open plains, and leopards occasionally in the trees. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the dry season rarely disappoints. The park is quieter than the Serengeti, which many guests prefer.

Birds, swamps and the wider ecosystem

Tarangire is also one of East Africa's best parks for birds, with ostrich on the plains, yellow-collared lovebirds and ashy starlings found almost only here, hornbills, bateleur eagles and, in the green season, thousands of waterbirds on the Silale and Gursi swamps in the south. The swamps stay green all year and are a good place to find buffalo and elephants in the afternoon, as well as lions resting at the edge.

The park is part of a much larger ecosystem: during the rains from November to May many of the animals leave Tarangire for the Maasai steppe and return as the water dries up, which is why the best time to visit Tarangire is the dry season. Even in the green season the river area keeps elephants and giraffes, the park is empty of other vehicles and the light is beautiful. Our guide times the game drive to the animals' movements and the heat.

The game drive: how the day works

Game drives take place in a 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof, so you can stand and photograph without leaving the car, which is the rule inside the park except at designated picnic sites. On the shared option you join other guests, up to the capacity of the vehicle, with everyone guaranteed a window seat; on the private option the vehicle and guide are yours alone and the start is a little earlier. Guides speak English, French or Spanish, and tell us your preference when booking.

Expect about six hours inside the park: a morning loop along the river, a picnic lunch at a site with toilets and views, then an afternoon loop towards the swamps before exiting the gate around 17:00. Is Tarangire worth visiting for just one day? Yes, it is the closest of the big northern parks to Arusha and compact enough that a single day covers its best areas.

The road from Arusha and the Maasai steppe

The drive from Arusha to Tarangire takes about two hours each way on a good tarmac road through the Maasai steppe, passing herders with cattle, red-robed Maasai villages and, on clear days, views of Mount Meru behind you and the Great Rift Valley escarpment ahead. The final stretch to the park gate is a short dirt road. How to get to Tarangire from Arusha without a tour is possible by car, but a safari vehicle with a guide is what makes the wildlife visible.

The day runs about thirteen hours from pickup at 08:00 (07:30 on the private option) to drop-off in the evening, so it is a long but rewarding outing. It combines well with a flight out of Kilimanjaro International Airport the next morning, or as a taster before a longer Serengeti safari. Tell us your hotel and we confirm it is within the Arusha pickup area.

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.

Is this a shared or a private tour?

The default option is a shared safari: solo travellers and couples join other guests in the same 4x4 for a better rate. The second option is fully private, with a vehicle and guide only for your party. Both options are shown in the booking panel.

Can we change the itinerary or the pace?

On the private option yes: your guide follows your interests, lingers at sightings and adjusts the timing. On the shared option the route is set for the group, though the guide still reacts to the day's sightings.

How many people fit in the vehicle?

The 4x4 safari vehicle seats six to seven guests with a window seat each and room to stand under the pop-up roof. On the private option it is only your party.

Is the price per person or per group?

Per person on both options, with a child rate for ages 17 and under. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.

Is hotel pickup included?

Yes, pickup and drop-off at hotels in the Arusha area are included on both options.

What is included?

Transport in a 4x4 safari vehicle, Tarangire National Park entry and fees, a guide in English, French or Spanish, a full-day game drive, lunch and bottled water. Tips, insurance and personal expenses are not included.

How long is the Tarangire day safari?

About thirteen hours door to door: roughly two hours of driving each way and six to seven hours in the park including lunch.

Is it suitable for children and people with reduced mobility?

Children who can sit through a long day enjoy it very much, and the child rate applies to ages 17 and under. Guests with limited mobility can usually manage as the day is spent in the vehicle; contact us about wheelchair access so we can advise honestly.

What should I bring?

Neutral clothes in layers, closed shoes, a hat, sun cream, insect repellent, binoculars, a camera and a little cash for tips.

What is the best time to visit Tarangire?

June to October, the dry season, when elephant herds gather at the river and grass is short. The green season from November to May is quieter and greener with fewer vehicles, and the river area still holds plenty of wildlife.

Will we see the Big Five?

Tarangire has lions, leopards, elephants and buffalo but no rhino, so the full Big Five is not possible here. Elephants are the park's speciality and sightings are frequent, though never guaranteed.

How do I book and confirm?

Choose the shared or private option and your date in the booking panel and send the request; our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes with your pickup time.
