Full Description
The Sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi
Delphi sits at about 570 metres on the southern slope of Mount Parnassus, overlooking a deep valley of olive trees that runs down to the Gulf of Corinth. For more than a thousand years it was the most important religious centre of ancient Greece, home of the oracle whose answers guided cities and travellers. The site is listed by UNESCO and is one of the most visited in the country.
A sacred way winds uphill past the rebuilt Treasury of the Athenians and the remains of other treasuries to the Temple of Apollo, whose massive foundations and standing columns mark the heart of the sanctuary. Above it are the theatre, with a superb view of the valley, and higher still the stadium, the best preserved in Greece. The climb is steep in places, so take it slowly. Is Delphi worth visiting? It is the most rewarding day trip from Athens for anyone interested in ancient Greece.
Virtual reality and audio guide at the site
What makes this Delphi day trip from Athens different is the technology. At key points of the sanctuary you put on a virtual reality headset and see the temples, statues and treasuries restored in full colour exactly where their ruins stand today. Audio commentary in many languages, from English to Greek and Japanese, explains each monument at your own pace.
The combination works well for families and first-time visitors, who often find ancient ruins hard to read. You keep the freedom to linger at the theatre or the Temple of Apollo, then rejoin the group at the meeting time. The visit to the archaeological site lasts about two and a half hours together with the museum.
Delphi Archaeological Museum
The Delphi Archaeological Museum, at the foot of the site, holds the treasures found during the excavations. Its star is the bronze charioteer, a life-size statue from the 5th century BC with remarkably lifelike eyes. Other highlights include the Sphinx of the Naxians on its tall column, the Omphalos stone that marked the centre of the world, gold and ivory pieces and the carved friezes of the Siphnian Treasury.
Allow about an hour for the museum. On the default option the entry tickets for both the site and the museum are pre-booked for you, which saves time at the ticket office. Delphi opening hours are longer from April to October and shorter in winter, and the site can be closed on a few national holidays.
Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia and the Castalian Spring
A short distance below the main sanctuary lies the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia, where travellers once stopped before climbing to the oracle. Its most famous monument is the Tholos, an elegant circular building of the 4th century BC with three restored marble columns, one of the most photographed images of Greece.
Between the two sanctuaries the Castalian Spring flows from a cleft in the Phaedriades cliffs; in antiquity pilgrims purified themselves in its water before consulting the oracle. Your guide will show you where to stand for the best view of the Tholos against the valley, a perfect photo stop on this tour. The lower sanctuary also holds the remains of an ancient gymnasium, where young athletes once trained on terraces cut into the slope.
Arachova and the mountain villages of Parnassus
After the archaeological visit the minibus stops in a traditional mountain village for about an hour and a quarter. On the default option a traditional lunch is served, with a seasonal salad and a main dish; tell us about any dietary needs when booking. Halal meat cannot be guaranteed outside Athens, but vegetarian and fish dishes are usually available.
The last stop is Arachova, a stone village of steep lanes at about 950 metres, known for its handwoven rugs, local cheese and honey, and as a winter base for the Parnassus ski area. The best time to visit Delphi is spring and autumn, when the slopes are green and the air is clear; in summer, a hat and water are essential on the exposed site.

The price is per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
The small-group options meet at central points in Plaka, Syntagma, Omonia and Piraeus. The private option picks you up from your hotel or address in Athens.

What is the best time of year to visit Delphi?
