Overview

The Ubud Kecak and Fire Dance is the most atmospheric evening show in Bali: a large circle of bare-chested men chants cak-cak-cak instead of any instrument, costumed dancers act out the Ramayana, and a trance dancer closes the night by kicking through burning coconut husks. This ticket gives you entry to the venue and a seat at the one-hour performance. The default option is staged in the gardens of the Agung Rai Museum of Art in Pengosekan, near the Monkey Forest, on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 19:00; other options cover temple, palace and village stages in Ubud on the remaining days. It is a shared public show that suits couples, families and first-time visitors. Hotel transfers are not included.

Full Description

Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA), Pengosekan

The Agung Rai Museum of Art, known simply as ARMA, is a museum and cultural centre set in landscaped tropical gardens on Jalan Raya Pengosekan, at the southern edge of central Ubud. Its galleries hold classical Kamasan paintings, Balinese village art and modern Indonesian works, and the grounds include rice-field views, traditional pavilions and an open-air stage that has become one of the best-loved Kecak venues in Ubud. Watching the dance here, with the dancers lit by torches and old frangipani trees behind them, feels very different from a hotel show.

If you are asking how to get to ARMA Ubud, it is about ten minutes by car from Ubud Palace and a short ride south of the Monkey Forest, and taxis and ride-hailing cars drop off right at the gate. The galleries keep their own daytime opening hours and ticket, so you can visit them in the afternoon, have an early dinner nearby and be back at the stage when it opens at 18:30.

The Kecak dance and the Ramayana story

Kecak grew out of the sacred Sanghyang trance ritual and took its present form as a performance in the villages around Ubud in the 1930s. There is no gamelan orchestra: the music is the voice of the choir, dozens of men in checked sarongs sitting in concentric circles around a flame, chanting interlocking rhythms of cak and swaying in unison. A narrator, the dalang, guides the story while the tempo rises and falls.

The story is taken from the Ramayana. Prince Rama and his wife Sita are exiled to the forest, Sita is carried off by the demon king Rahwana, and the white monkey general Hanuman leads his army to rescue her. The circle of men becomes the monkey army, the forest and the battlefield in turn. Many visitors ask whether the Ubud Kecak dance is worth it; for anyone curious about Balinese culture, the hypnotic chant alone answers that question.

The fire dance finale and Sanghyang Jaran

Once the Ramayana ends, the choir leaves the stage and a pile of dried coconut husks is set alight in the centre. A dancer in trance, riding a woven hobby horse, walks and kicks barefoot through the glowing embers while priests watch over him. This is the Sanghyang Jaran, the fire-horse dance, rooted in old rituals meant to protect the village from harm.

At the ARMA venue, the Saturday show adds the full Sanghyang Jaran sequence, which makes Saturday the most popular evening at this stage. On Monday and Wednesday the fire finale is shorter but still dramatic. Sit away from the front row if you are with small children who may be startled by sparks, and keep the flash off: the dancers rely on concentration, and the firelight gives the best photos anyway.

Kecak venues across Ubud and the evening around the show

Ubud has several Kecak stages, each with its own days, and this page groups them in one booking. Besides ARMA, you can choose Pura Dalem Gede Kutuh Kaja on Sunday and Tuesday, the royal courtyard of Peliatan Palace on Thursday, Dalem Junjungan Temple on Saturday at 19:30, or the village stage of Sayan above the Ayung valley on Friday and Sunday, with a front-area seating option there. Compared with the cliff-top show at Uluwatu, the Ubud shows are smaller, calmer and closer to village temple life.

For anyone looking for things to do in Ubud at night, the Kecak fits neatly into the evening: the show finishes around 20:00, leaving time for dinner on Jalan Hanoman or Jalan Monkey Forest. The best time to visit is the dry season from April to October, when evening rain is rare, but shows run all year round.
