Full Description

Mount Bromo and the Tengger caldera

Mount Bromo rises to about 2,329 metres inside the vast Tengger caldera in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, East Java. The grey cone of Bromo stands beside the cone-shaped Batok and behind them Semeru, the highest mountain on Java at 3,676 metres, sends up regular puffs of ash. It is one of the most photographed volcanic landscapes in Indonesia.

Travellers searching for a Bromo Ijen tour usually want to see both in one trip, and this route makes that easy. The caldera floor is known as the Sea of Sand, a wide plain of volcanic ash, and the Tengger people, who follow a Hindu tradition, live in the nearby villages and hold the annual Yadnya Kasada ceremony at the crater.

Bromo sunrise, the Sea of Sand and the crater rim

The Bromo sunrise is the highlight of day two. In the dark, guests travel to a viewpoint on the caldera rim, usually at Penanjakan at about 2,770 metres, where the first light reveals the volcanoes rising from a sea of cloud. The morning is cold, so bring a warm jacket, gloves and a hat.

After sunrise the group descends to the Sea of Sand and walks to the base of Bromo, where a stairway of about 250 steps leads to the crater rim. Many people ask about the best time to visit Bromo. The dry season from April to October brings the clearest skies, while the wet season can hide the view. The exact plan depends on your option and the conditions on the day.

Ijen Crater, blue fire and turquoise lake

Ijen lies at the eastern tip of Java and is famous for its blue fire, the electric-blue flames of burning sulphurous gas seen only in the dark. After a night drive to the trailhead you hike about three kilometres to the rim with a headlamp and a gas mask, then descend into the crater with your guide when conditions are safe.

At sunrise the crater lake turns a striking turquoise, and sulphur miners carry heavy baskets up the crater wall. The hike is steep and needs reasonable fitness. The crater can close when gas levels are high, so the blue fire is never guaranteed. Wear warm clothing and bring water for this stage of the tour.

Route, ferry and the options from Bali or Yogyakarta

From Bali, the route crosses the Bali Strait by ferry between Gilimanuk and Ketapang, then drives through East Java to the Bromo area and later to Ijen. A typical Bromo Ijen tour from Bali runs Bali to Bromo on day one, Bromo sunrise and the drive to Ijen on day two, and the Ijen night hike and return on day three, though the order can vary.

The default option is a budget group tour from Bali and back to Bali with two nights in a homestay or dormitory. Other options start from Yogyakarta, end in Surabaya or Yogyakarta, or use a standard hotel, and one option flies from Bali to Surabaya. Distances are long, so please read each option carefully in the booking panel.
