Tandem Paragliding Flight in Cape Town
4.7 (1,995 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
Tandem paragliding in Cape Town is the simplest way to fly: you meet your certified pilot at the take-off site on Signal Hill, clip into a double harness, take a few running steps down the grassy slope and the wind lifts you both into the air. Seated in front of your pilot, you glide over the Atlantic Seaboard with Lion's Head behind you, Camps Bay and Clifton below and Robben Island to the north, then land softly on the coast. Time in the air is five to twenty minutes depending on the wind, and the session takes about forty-five minutes. No experience is needed. It suits anyone aged fourteen and over who wants a thrill.

Full Description
Signal Hill take-off site
Signal Hill is the rounded ridge that runs north from Lion's Head and ends above the Waterfront; the noon gun is fired from its slopes every day. The paragliding launch is on its western side, a grassy slope at about 350 metres facing the Atlantic, where the sea breeze arrives smooth and steady on good days. The meeting point is on Signal Hill Road, about ten minutes by car from the city centre; transport to the site is not included, and taxis and ride-hailing cars reach it easily.
How to get to the Signal Hill paragliding take-off: follow Signal Hill Road from Kloof Nek past the Lion's Head car park and continue towards the summit; the launch area is signposted and your instructor confirms the exact spot the day before. On some wind directions the launch moves to the slopes of Lion's Head instead. Arrive a few minutes early, wear closed shoes and leave anything loose in the car.
The flight
After a short briefing on the harness, the take-off run and the landing position, you stand in front of your pilot while the wing is laid out behind you. On the signal you walk, then jog, a few steps down the slope; the wing inflates overhead and within seconds your feet leave the grass. There is no drop or free-fall, just a smooth lift as the breeze takes the canopy, and most first-timers describe it as calmer than they expected.
Once airborne you settle into the seat and the pilot steers along the ridge, picking up lift where the wind hits the slope. Below you lie the Atlantic Seaboard beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, the Twelve Apostles beyond them, and the city and harbour to the north with Robben Island floating in Table Bay. If conditions allow, the pilot hands you the controls for a moment to feel how the wing responds. Flights last between five and twenty minutes depending on the thermals and wind.
Landing on the Atlantic Seaboard
The landing field depends on the wind on the day: usually the open lawns along the Sea Point promenade or a beachfront green near Camps Bay. The approach is gentle, you lift your legs as instructed and touch down walking or sitting on the grass. Photos and videos taken by the pilot with an action camera are available to buy afterwards; if you bring your own camera, it must be secured to you.
From the landing site you can stay on the coast for the beaches and cafés, or take the optional transfer back to the take-off site where your car or taxi is waiting. The best time of day for paragliding in Cape Town is usually the morning or late afternoon, when the breeze is steady and the thermals gentle; midday in summer can be too strong, which is why your pilot confirms the exact slot the day before.
Weather and the Cape Town flying season
Paragliding depends entirely on the wind, and Cape Town has two very different seasons. From October to March the south-easterly wind can blow hard for days, grounding flights, with calmer windows early in the morning; from April to September the weather is milder with occasional rain fronts and often excellent, smooth flying days in between. Flights run year-round but your booked time may move by an hour or two, or to another day, if conditions change.
Is paragliding in Cape Town safe? Tandem flights are flown by licensed instructors with certified equipment, and they simply do not fly when the wind is wrong; patience with rescheduling is part of the experience. Our team keeps you informed on WhatsApp, and we recommend booking early in your stay so there is room to move the flight if the first day is blown out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private activity?
Each flight is a private tandem with your own instructor; several passengers may be at the launch site at the same time, each flying with their own pilot.
Can we change the time or the pace?
Times are set by the wind. Your pilot confirms the slot the day before and may move it by an hour or two; just tell us your preferred part of the day when booking.
How many people can fly together?
One passenger per pilot. Groups fly one after another or at the same time if enough pilots are on the hill; tell us your group size.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person. The booking panel on this page shows the current price.
Is hotel pickup included?
No, transport to Signal Hill is not included; a taxi or ride-hailing car takes about ten minutes from the city centre. An optional transfer back to the take-off site after landing is available.
What is included?
The tandem flight with a certified instructor, the safety briefing, all certified flying equipment including harness and helmet, and the optional transfer back to the take-off site.
How long is the activity?
About forty-five minutes in total, with five to twenty minutes in the air depending on conditions.
Do I need experience or a good level of fitness?
No experience is needed. You need to be able to run a few steps on a slope and lift your legs for landing; the pilot does the rest.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
The minimum age is fourteen and the minimum weight 23 kg. The take-off run and landing require mobility, so it is not suitable for people with significant mobility limitations.
What should I bring?
Closed shoes, comfortable clothes, sunglasses, a light jacket in winter and your passport or ID card or a copy.
What is the best time of day and season?
Mornings and late afternoons usually have the smoothest air. Autumn and winter often give the most reliable flying days; summer afternoons can be too windy, so morning slots are safest.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose a date and preferred time in the booking panel on this page and send the request; our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes, and your pilot reconfirms the exact time the day before.
