Full Description

Lovina Beach and the North Bali coast

Lovina is a quiet stretch of black-sand beaches on Bali's north coast in the Buleleng region, far from the busy south. The sea here is sheltered and usually calm in the early morning, which is why local fishermen began taking visitors out to see dolphins decades ago. A dolphin statue on the beach at Kalibukbuk marks the centre of the resort area.

Your day starts at a basecamp near the beach with Balinese coffee or tea and a short safety briefing before boarding a jukung, the traditional outrigger boat. Because Lovina is a long way from Ubud and the south, most guests join a tour with hotel pickup rather than drive themselves, and that is exactly what our default option offers.

Dolphin watching at sunrise

Boats leave the beach before the sun comes up and head a short distance offshore, where the captain searches the horizon for dolphins. Dolphins are wild and free, so sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the Lovina dolphin tour has a strong record and the search itself is beautiful, with the sun rising behind the mountains of the Bali coast.

Responsible operators keep a set distance from the animals, do not chase them and do not allow touching. Many visitors ask about the best time for dolphin watching in Lovina: early morning in the dry season, from April to October, gives the calmest sea and the best light. Lovina dolphin watching is a shared experience, so other boats may be out too.

Boat-assisted swim and reef snorkelling

When sea conditions are suitable, guests can enjoy a boat-assisted swim by holding a floating line attached to the boat while looking down at the water. The captain supervises the activity and it is designed to disturb the animals as little as possible. If the sea is rough this step may be skipped.

After the dolphins the boat moves to a nearby coral reef where you snorkel with the mask, fins and life jacket provided. You can expect colourful reef fish, healthy corals and clear water close to shore. Guests who only want to watch dolphins can choose the dolphin-only option without swimming or snorkelling.

Getting to Lovina from Ubud, Seminyak and Kuta

How to get to Lovina from Ubud or the south is the most common question, and the answer is a long early-morning drive across the island of about two hours each way. In our default option a driver collects you at your hotel in Central Bali, including Ubud, Canggu, Kuta and Seminyak, and returns you after the tour, so you can sleep in the car.

Other options collect guests from North Bali or from South, East and West Bali, from a central pickup point in Ubud, or you can meet at Lovina Beach if you are staying in the north. Luggage can be stored at the basecamp, and showers and toilets are available there. Pickup times vary by area and are confirmed the day before.
