Full Description
The Atlantis Dunes
The dune field lies beside the town of Atlantis on Cape Town's West Coast, inside the Witzands Aquifer Nature Reserve. The sand is brilliant white because it is blown inland from the Atlantic beaches, and the dunes shift constantly with the wind, forming crests, bowls and long slopes that look like a desert dropped beside the sea. It is a protected area, so riders stay on the permitted zones and a reserve permit is paid at the gate on arrival.
How to get to the Atlantis Dunes from Cape Town: the drive takes about forty-five minutes along the R27 West Coast Road and then inland on Dassenberg Drive; the meeting point is at the dune entrance. There is no public transport, so most guests come by hire car or ask us for a private transfer. Arrive fifteen minutes before your session to sign in and get fitted with a helmet.
The quad bike ride
The session begins with a briefing on the throttle, brakes and body position, followed by a practice loop on firm, flat sand so everyone is comfortable before the real riding begins. The bikes are automatic, so there are no gears to worry about. Your guide then leads the group in a line into the dunes, choosing routes to match the group's confidence: gentle slopes for first-timers, steeper climbs and faster descents for those who want more.
The ride itself lasts about an hour including the viewpoint stop. Expect soft sand, sharp crests and the occasional bumpy traverse; the guide stops regularly to regroup and to point out the best lines. Riders aged thirteen and over drive their own quad. A separate child category exists for younger riders; tell us their ages when booking and we will confirm how they take part.
The viewpoint and photo stop
Halfway through the ride the guide climbs to the highest dune in the permitted zone and the group stops for photographs. From here the dune field stretches in every direction, with the dark green of the reserve's vegetation beyond it and, on clear days, the long outline of Table Mountain far to the south across the bay. The light is softest in the late afternoon session, when the ridges throw long shadows and the sand turns gold.
Bring your own phone or action camera, as photos are not provided; a strap or a zipped pocket is essential because sand gets everywhere. If you are visiting in the windy summer months, the morning sessions are usually calmer and the sand is firmer. In winter the dunes are quieter and the air clearer, which many photographers prefer.
Atlantis and the West Coast
Atlantis itself is an industrial town established in the 1970s; the dunes on its edge are the reason visitors come. The surrounding West Coast is flat and open, with the Atlantic beaches of Melkbosstrand and Bloubergstrand on the way back to Cape Town. Bloubergstrand is famous for the classic view of Table Mountain across Table Bay, so a stop there on the return drive rounds off the outing nicely.
Because the dune ride takes only an hour, it combines easily with a half-day in the city, an afternoon at the Waterfront or a morning trip to the West Coast National Park in spring, when the wild flowers bloom. Ask us to put together a private day that links the dunes with the stops you want; our driver waits for you while you ride.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private activity?
It is a shared small-group ride with a guide leading the line. Ask us if you would like a private session for your own party.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
The guide adapts the route and speed to the group's ability, keeping beginners comfortable while letting confident riders take the steeper lines.
How many people ride together?
Groups are kept small so the guide can watch everyone; each rider aged thirteen and over has their own quad bike.
Is the price per person or per group?
Per person, with an adult rate and a separate child rate. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option.
Is hotel pickup included?
No, the price covers the ride only. We can arrange a private transfer from Cape Town and back; ask us when booking.
What is included?
The quad bike, helmet and safety gear, the briefing and practice loop, and the guide for the hour-long ride. The reserve permit, transport and photos are not included.
How long does it take?
The ride lasts about an hour; with sign-in and briefing, plan on an hour and a quarter at the dunes plus the drive from Cape Town.
Do I need experience?
No. The quads are automatic and the practice loop gets most people comfortable within a few minutes. You will need to be able to hold the handlebars firmly and shift your weight on slopes.
Is it suitable for children or people with reduced mobility?
Teenagers from thirteen can ride their own quad and love it. Younger children are handled case by case; tell us their ages. The ride is bumpy and needs core strength, so it does not suit everyone with reduced mobility.
What should I bring?
Closed shoes, clothes you can get sandy, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and a phone or camera with a strap. A bank card or cash for the reserve permit.
What is the best time of day to ride?
Morning sessions are calmer and the sand firmer, especially in the windy summer months; late afternoon has the best light for photographs.
How do I book and confirm?
Pick a date and session time in the booking panel on this page; our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes.
