Full Description

Saigon Opera House and Lam Son Square

The ride starts and ends at the Saigon Opera House, the elegant theatre built by the French in 1900 at the top of Lam Son Square in District 1. Its arched entrance, carved figures and pale façade were inspired by the Petit Palais in Paris, and at night warm floodlights make it one of the most photographed buildings in the city. Around it stand historic hotels and the smart shopping streets of the old colonial centre.

From the top deck you get a high view of the square that you cannot have from the pavement, which is ideal for photos. Arrive a little early to exchange your voucher at the kiosk next to the theatre and pick a good seat. If you want to see the interior, the Opera House hosts evening performances on some days, with tickets sold separately.

The central pedestrian boulevard

Shortly after leaving the Opera House, the bus passes the wide pedestrian boulevard that runs from the old City Hall down to the Saigon River. In the evening it becomes the city's living room: families stroll with children, young people meet friends, and musicians, dancers, jugglers and skateboarders perform under the lights. Fountains and tall modern towers line the edges, and the yellow colonial City Hall glows at the top end.

Seen from the top deck, the crowds and lights create a festive picture that shows how much Saigon lives outdoors after sunset. Many travellers return on foot after the ride to enjoy the atmosphere. It is one of the best things to do in Saigon at night, especially at weekends when the boulevard is at its busiest.

The Saigon riverside and Nha Rong Wharf

The route then reaches the Saigon River, where wide riverside parks, ferry piers and the river bus stop line the bank. Nha Rong Wharf, built by the French in the 1860s, was the first port building in the city; its name means House of Dragons, after the two dragon figures on its roof. Today it is a historic landmark and a reminder that Saigon grew up as a busy river port.

At night the river reflects the neon of the towers on both banks and the lights of the dinner boats passing by. From the bus you see the contrast between the old port buildings and the new skyline of the Thu Thiem district opposite. It is a short but memorable stretch for photos, so keep your camera ready as the bus turns along the water.

The Thu Thiem Bridges

Two modern bridges link central Saigon with the fast-growing Thu Thiem area on the east bank of the river. The first Thu Thiem Bridge opened in 2008, and the newer cable-stayed Thu Thiem 2 Bridge, with its tall slanted tower, opened in 2022 and has quickly become a symbol of the modern city. Both are lit with changing colours after dark.

The panoramic bus passes these bridges so you can see their lights over the black water and the skyline beyond. From the top deck the view is wide and open, and the breeze from the river is welcome on a warm evening. This part of the ride shows a side of Ho Chi Minh City that is very different from the colonial centre you saw a few minutes earlier.

Turtle Lake, Saigon Cathedral and the Central Post Office

Turtle Lake is a small circular pond with a modern sculpture at the centre of a busy roundabout, surrounded by tree-lined streets of the old French quarter. In the evening it is one of the liveliest meeting places for students and local families, who sit around the water eating grilled rice paper, fresh fruit and other street snacks. From the bus you see the buzz of local life rather than tourist sights.

The last highlights before returning to the Opera House are Saigon Cathedral, built in red brick between 1877 and 1880 with twin bell towers, and the Central Post Office beside it, a grand colonial building with an iron-framed hall. Both are beautiful when lit at night. They are open to visitors during the day, so many travellers come back the next morning to see the interiors.
