Full Description
Taro Village in the hills north of Ubud
Taro is a traditional village in the Tegallalang district of Gianyar, about 40 minutes by road north of Ubud. It is known for its peaceful setting among forest and rice terraces and for the sacred white cows that are kept near the village temple, Pura Gunung Raung, which is said to be more than a thousand years old.
Because Taro lies away from the main tourist roads, the evenings are quiet and the night sky is dark, which is why it suits a Taro firefly tour so well. Many visitors ask, is Taro Village worth visiting? If you enjoy slow travel, rural scenery and meeting local people, then yes, and the evening format means you avoid the daytime crowds.
Organic farm visit and Balinese dinner
The evening begins at an organic agroforestry farm in Taro, where you receive a refreshing welcome drink and a guided tour of the plants. You see coffee, spices, fruit and vegetables growing together, and your guide explains how the family uses the farm for food and traditional medicine.
Dinner is served at the farm and is a relaxed feast of local dishes. In our default option it forms part of the evening programme, so you need not organise a meal separately. If you have dietary needs, tell us when you book so the kitchen can prepare for you. The setting among the trees makes the meal special.
A family compound and village life
After dinner your guide takes you to a traditional Balinese family compound, where several generations live together around shared courtyards and a family temple. You meet family members and learn how daily life, offerings and ceremonies fit together in a Balinese household.
This visit is one of the most valued parts of the tour, because it lets travellers speak with local people rather than only watching from a distance. Be polite, ask before taking photographs of people and dress modestly. The visit lasts around half an hour and is followed by a short drive to the rice fields.
Rice paddies, subak and the fireflies
The final stop is a walk through the rice paddies, where your guide explains the subak, the cooperative irrigation system that has shared water between Balinese farmers for centuries. You stop at spots where fireflies gather and rest in a small hut in the middle of the fields, listening to crickets, frogs and geckos and talking about local traditions.
Travellers searching for a fireflies tour in Bali should know that sightings depend on the season, the weather and the moon, so they cannot be guaranteed. When conditions are good the paddies glitter like tiny lanterns. Bring a light jacket and comfortable shoes, and keep torches switched off so the insects stay visible.
