Mnemba Island Snorkelling and Dolphins from Matemwe
4.5 (101 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
Matemwe is the closest village to Mnemba Island, so this is the shortest crossing to Zanzibar's most famous snorkelling reef. A shared boat with captain and guide leaves from Matemwe beach in the early morning or early afternoon, looks for wild dolphins in the channel, anchors over the coral gardens of the Mnemba Atoll conservation area for snorkelling and, when the tide is low, lands you on the white sandbank near the island. Snorkelling gear, fresh fruit and water are on board. The default option includes hotel pickup from Matemwe, Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa and Uroa and the marine conservation fee; a lighter option for guests who can reach Matemwe beach themselves is also on the booking panel. Suits couples, families with children who swim, and friends on a beach holiday.

Full Description
Mnemba Atoll from the east coast
Mnemba Island lies just a few kilometres off Matemwe, close enough to see from the beach, and the ring of reef around it, the Mnemba Atoll, is protected as a marine conservation area with some of the clearest water in Zanzibar. The island itself is private and closed to visitors; a Mnemba snorkelling trip from Matemwe takes you to the coral gardens in the shallow water around it, where the boat anchors and the guide leads you over the reef.
Expect about an hour in the water among parrotfish, surgeonfish, angelfish, clownfish, moray eels and, with luck, green turtles. Visibility is often excellent in the morning before the wind picks up. The reef is shallow and the snorkelling is suitable for beginners who are comfortable in the sea; the guide stays close and the crew keeps watch from the boat. Because the crossing from Matemwe is so short, you spend more of the four hours on the reef and less travelling.
Dolphins in the Mnemba channel
The channel between the east coast and Mnemba is a regular feeding ground for bottlenose and spinner dolphins, and the dolphin search opens the trip. The captain looks for fins and birds working the surface, slows the boat when a pod is found and keeps a respectful distance; when the animals are relaxed and the sea is calm, the guide shows you how to enter the water quietly and watch them swim past below you.
We follow responsible wildlife guidelines: no chasing, touching or crowding, and swimming happens only when the guide judges it safe. Dolphins are wild, so sightings are never guaranteed, although they are seen on most days in this channel. The search usually takes thirty to forty-five minutes before the boat moves on to the reef.
The sandbank at low tide
Near the atoll a bank of brilliant white sand appears for a few hours around low tide and disappears again as the sea returns. When the tide is right, the boat lands you here for the fruit break: you walk on sand with water in every shade of blue on all sides, swim in the warm shallows and take the photos that define a Zanzibar holiday, with Mnemba Island in the background. Children love it.
Tide times change daily, which is why the trip has an early-morning and an early-afternoon departure; our team checks the tide for your date and suggests the better one. When the tide is high, the time is spent on more snorkelling or a stop at a quiet stretch of beach, so the trip is worthwhile at every tide.
Matemwe, Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa and Uroa
The north-east coast of Zanzibar is a long line of white beaches backed by palms and fishing villages: Matemwe in the north, then Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa and Uroa to the south. Pickup is included from hotels in all four on the default option, and the drive to Matemwe beach takes between ten and forty minutes depending on where you stay. The sea here is tidal, so the beach changes dramatically through the day, which is part of its charm.
How to get to Mnemba from the east coast is simplest with this trip: no long drive to the north, just a short transfer and a short crossing. Guests who prefer to come to Matemwe beach on their own can book the meeting-point option and pay the government conservation fee in cash on arrival; it runs slightly later and is about an hour shorter.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
Both options are shared trips priced per person, with a captain and guide on a boat you share with other guests. If you prefer a boat for your party only, ask us about our private Mnemba trip.
How long is the Mnemba trip from Matemwe?
About four hours including the hotel transfers on the default option, and about three hours on the meeting-point option, which starts and ends at Matemwe beach.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes on the default option, from hotels in Matemwe, Pwani Mchangani, Kiwengwa and Uroa. The meeting-point option does not include transfers.
What is included?
The shared boat with captain and guide, snorkelling gear, fresh fruit and water and, on the default option, hotel transfers and the marine conservation fee. Lunch and tips are not included; on the meeting-point option the conservation fee is paid in cash on arrival.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a child rate for younger children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.
Will we see dolphins and can we swim with them?
Dolphins are seen on most days in the channel, but they are wild and sightings are never guaranteed. When a relaxed pod is found and the sea is calm, the guide lets you enter the water and watch them from a respectful distance.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes for children who can swim or are confident in a life jacket, usually from about five years; the sandbank stop is a highlight for families. Very small children are not recommended because of the open-sea boat ride.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
You should be comfortable in open water. The reef is shallow and life jackets are available, and the guide stays with the group, but there is no shore to stand on while snorkelling.
What should I bring?
Swimwear worn under your clothes, a towel, a T-shirt or rash vest, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a waterproof phone pouch, snacks for children and cash for tips or, on the meeting-point option, the conservation fee.
Morning or afternoon: which departure is better?
The early morning has the calmest sea and best visibility; the early afternoon suits late risers and often has warmer water. The deciding factor is the tide for the sandbank, which we check for you. The calmest months are June to October and December to February.
Can we visit Mnemba Island itself?
No. Mnemba is a private island and visitors are not allowed on it; all snorkelling takes place in the atoll waters around it, where the reef is.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose the option, date and departure on this page and send the booking. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the pickup or meeting time the day before.
