Tumbatu Island Snorkelling and Dolphins from Nungwi
4.7 (82 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
Tumbatu Island is the quieter alternative to Mnemba for snorkelling from Nungwi: a large island off the north-west coast whose reefs see far fewer boats, so the coral is healthy. This half-day trip starts with pickup at your hotel in Nungwi and a boat ride out to the waters where pods of wild dolphins are often seen, with the chance to swim near them under the guide's instructions when conditions allow. The boat then crosses the channel to the reefs of Tumbatu for about an hour of snorkelling among corals and tropical fish, with tropical fruit and bottled water on board. Snorkelling gear and an English-speaking guide are included, and you are back in Nungwi by early afternoon. It suits couples, families and anyone who prefers a calmer reef.

Full Description
Tumbatu Island and its reefs
Tumbatu is a large island of the Zanzibar archipelago, a long, low strip of coral rock lying just off the north-west coast of the main island, across a channel from the fishing town of Mkokotoni and clearly visible from Nungwi. Its people, the Watumbatu, are famous sailors and fishermen with their own dialect of Swahili and a strong tradition of keeping the island to themselves, so visitors do not land there; the trip is about the sea around it, which is exactly why the reefs are so good.
The coral gardens off Tumbatu are shallow, sheltered and lightly visited, with hard and soft corals, shoals of fusiliers and snappers, parrotfish, butterflyfish, lionfish tucked under ledges and sometimes turtles and rays passing over the sand. You snorkel for about an hour with the guide, who finds the best patches for the day's conditions. Tumbatu snorkelling from Nungwi is a good choice for guests who have already seen Mnemba, or who simply prefer a reef without a crowd of boats.
Dolphin watching off the north coast
The waters off Nungwi, between the lighthouse and Tumbatu, are a feeding area for bottlenose dolphins and the smaller spinner dolphins, and the dolphin search is the first part of the morning. The captain reads the sea for fins and birds, slows the boat when a pod is found and keeps a respectful distance; when the dolphins are relaxed and the sea is calm, the guide shows you how to enter the water quietly and watch them pass beneath you.
We follow responsible wildlife guidelines: no chasing, no touching and no crowding, and swimming happens only when the guide judges it safe. Dolphins are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed, although they are seen on most mornings along this coast. The search usually takes forty-five minutes to an hour before the boat heads across to the reef.
Nungwi, the departure point
Nungwi sits at the northern tip of Zanzibar, about an hour's drive from Stone Town, and is the island's main base for boat trips thanks to its deep-water beach that stays accessible at every tide. Pickup is from your hotel reception or entrance in Nungwi at about eight in the morning, followed by a short walk or drive to the beach, where you wade out to board the boat. On the way out you pass the dhow-building yard and the old lighthouse at Ras Nungwi.
The crossing to the Tumbatu reefs takes about thirty to forty minutes, and from the water you see the whole north coast, the fishing boats and the green bulk of Tumbatu ahead. How to get to Tumbatu Island from Nungwi is therefore simple: there is no public ferry for visitors, and this trip handles the transfers and the boat for you. The trip takes about four hours in total and finishes in time for lunch.
Fruit break and the return
After the snorkelling the boat anchors in calm water or drifts along the Tumbatu shore while the crew serves tropical fruit, typically pineapple, mango, banana and watermelon depending on the season, with bottled water. It is a relaxed half hour to warm up in the sun, compare what everyone saw on the reef and photograph the island and the channel. When is the best time to visit Tumbatu? Mornings are calmest and clearest, and the driest months, June to October and December to February, give the best visibility.
The boat then crosses back to Nungwi, arriving around noon, and we return you to your hotel. The afternoon is free for the beach, the Nungwi turtle aquarium or a sunset dhow cruise, all of which we can arrange from the same hotels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is a shared half-day boat trip priced per person, with a captain and a local English-speaking guide. If you would like a boat for your party only, ask us on WhatsApp and we will check what is possible on your date.
How is Tumbatu different from Mnemba?
Mnemba is the famous reef and attracts many boats; Tumbatu's reefs are quieter, closer to Nungwi on the west side and often just as rich in fish and coral. Many guests do both on different days.
How long is the Tumbatu snorkelling trip?
About four hours from pickup at around eight in the morning to drop-off around noon, including the dolphin search, the crossing, about an hour of snorkelling and the fruit break.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, from hotels in Nungwi. Guests staying elsewhere can ask us about a transfer before booking.
What is included?
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Nungwi, the boat, a local English-speaking guide, snorkelling gear, tropical fruit and bottled water. Lunch and tips are not included.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a child rate for younger children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date.
Will we see dolphins and can we swim with them?
Dolphins are seen on most mornings off Nungwi, but they are wild and sightings are never guaranteed. When a relaxed pod is found and the sea is calm, the guide lets you enter the water and watch them from a respectful distance, without chasing or touching.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes for children who can swim or are confident in a life jacket, usually from about five years. The reef is shallow and the guide stays close; very small children are not recommended because of the open-sea boat ride.
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
You should be comfortable in open water. Life jackets are available and the guide stays with the group, but the reef is reached from the boat, not from a beach.
What should I bring?
Swimwear worn under your clothes, a towel, a T-shirt or rash vest, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a waterproof phone pouch and some cash for tips.
When is the best time for this trip?
Mornings all year, which is why the trip starts at eight. The calmest, clearest months are June to October and December to February; the long rains from mid-March to May can bring choppier seas and occasional cancellations.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date on this page and send the booking. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your exact pickup time the day before.
