Mnemba Island Snorkelling and Dolphin Trip from Kendwa
4.7 (1,436 reviews) from travellers who booked this experience
Overview
This is the classic Mnemba snorkelling trip from the north coast of Zanzibar for anyone staying in Kendwa or Nungwi. A motorboat collects you from the beach in front of your hotel and cruises east along the coast, where pods of wild dolphins are often seen and, when conditions allow, you can swim near them under the guide's instructions. The boat then anchors over the coral gardens of the Mnemba Atoll marine conservation area for snorkelling among tropical fish, and finishes on the white sandbank near Mnemba when the tide is low. Snorkelling gear, life jackets, fresh fruit, soft drinks and the marine conservation fees are included. It is a shared small-group trip with an English-speaking guide; an afternoon departure is also on the booking panel.

Full Description
Mnemba Atoll marine conservation area
Mnemba is a tiny private island about three kilometres off the north-east coast of Zanzibar, surrounded by a ring of coral reef that forms the Mnemba Atoll. The waters around it are a protected marine conservation area, which is why a conservation fee is charged and why the reef is in such good condition. The island itself cannot be visited, but all the snorkelling happens in the shallow, sheltered water over the reef, where visibility is often excellent and the sea is a bright turquoise that looks unreal in photos.
You snorkel for about an hour over coral gardens full of parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, clownfish in their anemones, moray eels hiding in the rocks and, with luck, green turtles grazing on the seagrass. The guide swims with the group and points things out; life jackets are available for weaker swimmers. Mnemba snorkelling from Kendwa is best in the morning, when the water is calmest and the light is directly overhead.
Dolphin watching off the north coast
The stretch of sea between Nungwi and Mnemba has resident pods of bottlenose dolphins and the smaller, acrobatic spinner dolphins, and the captain knows the areas where they feed in the morning. When a pod is found, the boat slows and keeps its distance, and if the dolphins are relaxed you can slip into the water with your mask and watch them pass beneath you, an experience many guests describe as the highlight of their holiday.
We follow responsible wildlife guidelines: no chasing, no touching, no crowding, and the guide decides when swimming is safe and respectful. Dolphins are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed, although they are seen on most days. The dolphin search takes about an hour at the start of the trip, and the rest of the morning is given to the reef and the sandbank.
The Mnemba sandbank at low tide
Close to the atoll a bank of pure white sand rises out of the sea for a few hours around low tide and disappears again as the water returns. When the tides cooperate, the boat lands you here for the last part of the morning: you walk on sand surrounded by water in every shade of blue, swim in the warm shallows, eat fresh pineapple, mango and watermelon from the boat and take the photos that end up framed on your wall with Mnemba Island in the background.
Tide times change every day, so our team checks them when you book and tells you honestly what to expect; on a high-tide morning the boat stops instead at Muyuni or another quiet beach on the mainland coast for the fruit break and a swim. Either way you are back on the beach at Kendwa or Nungwi around half past twelve, in time for lunch.
Kendwa and Nungwi, the departure beaches
Kendwa and Nungwi sit side by side on the northern tip of Zanzibar and share the island's best swimming beaches, with deep white sand and water that stays swimmable at every tide. The trip starts on the beach in front of your hotel: the boat comes in to the shore and you wade out to board, so wear sandals you do not mind getting wet. Pickup times depend on where your hotel is along the beach and are confirmed with you the day before.
Guests staying outside Kendwa and Nungwi, for example on the east coast or in Stone Town, can still join; they meet the boat at the Nungwi beach meeting point, and we can arrange a taxi on request. The afternoon option follows the same route in softer light and returns before sunset, which is ideal if you prefer a slow morning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this a shared or a private tour?
It is a shared small-group trip priced per person, with an English-speaking guide and a captain. If you would like a boat for your party only, we also offer a private Mnemba trip from Nungwi; ask us on WhatsApp.
How long is the Mnemba trip from Kendwa?
About four hours: pickup from around eight in the morning and return to the beach at around half past twelve. The afternoon option runs from about one o'clock and returns before sunset.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, by boat from the beach in front of your hotel in Nungwi or Kendwa. Guests from other areas meet at the Nungwi beach meeting point; taxi transfers can be arranged on request.
What is included?
Boat transport, an English-speaking guide, mask, fins, snorkel and life jackets, fresh seasonal fruit, soft drinks and water, and the Mnemba Atoll marine conservation fees. Lunch and tips for the crew are not included.
Will we see and swim with dolphins?
Dolphins are seen on most mornings along this coast, but they are wild and sightings are never guaranteed. When a relaxed pod is found and conditions are safe, the guide lets you enter the water and watch them from a respectful distance.
Do I need to be a good swimmer?
You should be comfortable in open water. Life jackets are provided and the guide stays with the group, but the reef is in open sea, so weak swimmers should wear a jacket and stay close to the boat.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per person, with a child rate for younger children. The booking panel on this page shows the current price of each option for your date.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes for children who can swim or are happy in a life jacket, usually from about five or six years. Small masks are available; the sandbank stop is a favourite with families. Infants are not recommended because of the open-water boat ride.
What should I bring?
Swimwear worn under your clothes, a towel, a T-shirt or rash vest for the sun, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a waterproof phone pouch and some cash for tips or a drink afterwards.
When is the best time for Mnemba snorkelling?
Mornings are calmest and clearest. The driest, calmest months are June to October and December to February; the long rains from mid-March to May bring choppier seas and occasional cancellations. The sandbank is best when low tide falls in the late morning.
Can we land on Mnemba Island?
No. Mnemba is a private island and visitors are not allowed on its beach; all snorkelling takes place in the surrounding atoll waters, which is where the reef is anyway.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose the morning or afternoon option and your date on this page and send the booking. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends your beach pickup time the day before.
