Overview
This private Mnemba snorkelling trip gives you a boat, a captain and an English-speaking guide for your party only. We collect you at your hotel in Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe or Kiwengwa, and set off from Muyuni beach or Nungwi depending on the weather. The morning begins with a search for wild dolphins, continues with snorkelling over the coral gardens of the Mnemba Atoll conservation area and, when the tide is low, ends with time on the white sandbank near the island; fresh fruit and water are on board and the marine conservation fees are included. Because the boat is yours, you choose how long to stay at each stop, where to swim and when to head back. Ideal for families, couples and friends who want Mnemba without a crowd.

Full Description
Mnemba Atoll, Zanzibar's best snorkelling
Mnemba is a small private island about three kilometres off the north-east coast of Zanzibar, ringed by a coral reef that forms the Mnemba Atoll and protected as a marine conservation area. The island itself is closed to visitors, so a Mnemba Island snorkelling trip is really a trip to the reef around it, which is where the beauty lies: shallow, sheltered water over coral gardens with visibility that often reaches twenty metres and a turquoise colour that defines Zanzibar in photographs.
On a private trip you snorkel for as long as you like, usually an hour or more, among parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, clownfish in their anemones, moray eels and, with some luck, green turtles grazing on the seagrass. The guide swims with you, finds the best patches of reef for the conditions and keeps an eye on children and weaker swimmers, who can wear life jackets. Mornings give the calmest water; our early departure gets you to the reef before anyone else.
Dolphin watching in the open sea
The channel between the north coast and Mnemba is the hunting ground of resident pods of bottlenose dolphins and the smaller spinner dolphins, and the dolphin search is the first part of the morning. Your captain reads the surface for fins and splashes, and when a pod is found the boat slows and keeps a respectful distance; if the animals are relaxed, the guide shows you how to slip quietly into the water and watch them pass beneath you.
We follow responsible wildlife guidelines, which means no chasing, no touching and no crowding, and the guide decides when swimming is safe. Dolphins are wild, so sightings are never guaranteed, although they are seen on most days. With a private boat you can decide together how long to spend looking for them before moving on to the reef, which is something a shared trip cannot offer.
The Mnemba sandbank at low tide
Near the atoll a bank of fine white sand rises out of the sea for a few hours around low tide. Landing on it feels like stepping onto a postcard: sand under your feet, water in every shade of blue on all sides and Mnemba Island on the horizon. It is where the fruit comes out, where children build castles in the shallows and where the best photos of the day are taken. On a private trip you stay as long as the tide allows.
Tide times move every day, which is why we offer three departure times; our team checks the tide when you book and recommends the start that gives you the sandbank. When the sea is high, the time is used for more snorkelling or a stop on a quiet beach of the main island, so is Mnemba worth visiting at high tide? Yes, the reef is the main attraction and it is there at every tide.
Departure beaches: Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe and Kiwengwa
Pickup is included from hotels in Nungwi and Kendwa on the north coast and from Matemwe and Kiwengwa on the north-east coast, either directly from your hotel beach or from the reception, and the guide confirms the pickup by your room number or booking reference. After a short stop to fit the snorkelling gear, the boat leaves from Muyuni beach or from Nungwi, whichever gives the smoothest sea that day; Muyuni is the closest mainland beach to Mnemba, so the crossing takes only around twenty minutes.
How to get to Mnemba Island from Nungwi is therefore simple: we handle the transfers and the boat, and you need only your swimwear and sun protection. The trip lasts about four hours door to door, and the early-afternoon departure is a good choice for guests who arrive in Zanzibar in the morning or prefer a slow start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers to what travellers ask us most, before they book.
Is this tour private?
Yes. The boat, the captain and the guide are for your party only; nobody else joins. This is the key difference from the shared Mnemba trips sold separately on our site.
Can we change the itinerary or the pace?
Yes. With your own boat you decide how long to spend with the dolphins, on the reef and on the sandbank, within the half-day time frame and the captain's judgement of sea conditions. Tell the guide what matters most to you and the morning is built around it.
How many people fit in the boat?
The trip is booked per boat and suits couples, families and small groups of friends. Tell us how many you are, including children, when you book and we will confirm that the boat is right for your party.
Is the price per person or per group?
The price is per boat, not per person, so it covers your whole party. The booking panel on this page shows the current price for your date.
Is hotel pickup included?
Yes, pickup and drop-off are included from hotels in Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe and Kiwengwa, from the hotel beach or the reception. Guests staying elsewhere can ask us about a transfer.
What is included?
A private boat with captain, an English-speaking guide, snorkelling equipment, fresh fruit and water, the marine conservation fees and the hotel transfers. Lunch and tips are not included.
How long is the private Mnemba trip?
About four hours from pickup to drop-off, with three departure times to choose from: early morning, mid-morning and early afternoon.
Is it suitable for children and people with reduced mobility?
It is one of the best family trips in Zanzibar for children from about two years who are happy on a boat, and the private format lets you adapt everything to them. It is not suitable for wheelchair users, as boarding is from the beach, or for people prone to motion sickness.
What should I bring?
Swimwear worn under your clothes, a towel, a T-shirt or rash vest for sun protection, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a waterproof phone pouch, snacks for children and some cash for tips.
When is the best time for Mnemba snorkelling?
Early morning gives the calmest, clearest water and the reef to yourselves. The driest months are June to October and December to February; from mid-March to May the long rains can bring rougher seas. The sandbank is best when low tide falls during your trip, which we check for you.
Will we see dolphins?
Dolphins are seen on most days along this coast, but they are wild and sightings are never guaranteed. The private boat lets you spend a little longer searching if you wish.
How do I book and confirm?
Choose your date and departure time on this page and send the booking with the number of people in your party. Our team confirms on WhatsApp within minutes and sends the exact pickup time the day before.
