Full Description
Nijo Castle and the Tokugawa shoguns
Nijo Castle was built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo period. It was designed to show the shogun's power in the city of the emperor, and after the fall of the shogunate in 1867 it became an imperial palace before opening to the public as a historic site.
It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, listed in 1994 with other monuments of ancient Kyoto. The guide explains why Nijo Castle in Kyoto is considered one of the best surviving examples of feudal-era castle architecture, and how the site's layout was meant to impress and protect.
The Karamon Gate and East Main Gate
You gather at the reception area just inside the East Main Gate, and the tour passes through the richly decorated Karamon Gate, the entrance to the Ninomaru precinct. Its carvings, gold fittings and colour show how a shogun wished to be seen.
The guide points out the details that visitors on their own often walk past, such as symbols and the craftsmanship of the roof. This part of the Nijo Castle guided tour also gives a clear sense of the castle's three zones: the main circle, the second circle and the encircling gardens.
The Ninomaru Palace
The Ninomaru Palace was the shogun's residence and office when he visited Kyoto, and it remains intact today. Its rooms are decorated with large painted screens and sliding doors of the Kano school, and its corridors have the famous nightingale floors that chirp when walked on, a design meant to warn of intruders.
This is also where the last Tokugawa shogun announced the return of power to the emperor in 1867. The guide leads you through some rooms that visitors on their own can see less easily, and shares what each space was used for. Interior photography is limited, so listen closely.
Ninomaru Garden and planning your visit
The tour finishes at the Ninomaru Garden, a landscape of pond, stones and pines designed to be seen from the palace rooms. It is one of the best places in the castle to relax and take pictures after the indoor visit.
Tours are in English at 10:00 and 12:00, last one hour and start at the reception next to the General Reception inside the East Main Gate. Castle admission is not included and is paid at the gate. The castle has closing days, including Tuesdays in some months and the New Year period, so check the date in the booking panel.
