Full Description
Nara Park and the sacred deer
Nara Park is an open green space in the old capital of Nara, where more than a thousand deer roam freely. In Shinto belief they are messengers of the gods, and they have become the symbol of the city. Visitors buy special deer crackers and the animals bow to ask for one.
The Nara day trip from Kyoto or Osaka gives you about an hour here, enough for photos, a walk under the trees and a look at the park's temples and shrines from the outside. Nara is popular with families, and it helps to keep bags closed, since the deer are eager.
Fushimi Inari Taisha
Fushimi Inari Taisha is the main shrine of Inari, the god of rice and business, and its trails are lined with thousands of vermilion torii gates that climb Mount Inari. The Senbon Torii section, where the gates stand shoulder to shoulder, is the most photographed spot, and the shrine has featured in films.
You have about 70 minutes here, long enough to walk the lower gates, take photos and reach a viewpoint. Fushimi Inari tours are best done early or late in the day, and the shrine is free to enter. Climbing the full mountain takes much longer than this stop allows.
Arashiyama bamboo grove, Nonomiya Shrine and Togetsukyo Bridge
Arashiyama, in western Kyoto, combines river scenery with quiet lanes and a famous bamboo grove where tall stalks sway over the path. Nonomiya Shrine, dating back to the Heian period, sits nearby with its rare unpainted Kuroki Torii gate and is known for blessings connected to love and study.
Togetsukyo Bridge gives broad views over the river and hills, and the Kimono Forest is a set of pillars covered in Kyoto textile patterns. Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO-listed Zen garden, can be visited for an extra fee if you wish. Allow about two and a half hours for free time, lunch and street snacks.
Choosing your start point and how the day runs
The tour has four options. You can depart at 9:00 from Kyoto and return to Kyoto, depart at 8:00 from Osaka and return to Osaka, or use the two mixed options that start in one city and finish in the other. This makes it a convenient way to see Nara from Osaka or Kyoto in a single day without booking separate trains.
The day lasts about nine to ten hours depending on your option. Traffic can be heavy on weekends and public holidays, so keep your evening plans flexible. Because start times differ, check the option name carefully when you book, and make sure you go to the right meeting point for your city.
