Overview

This full-day tour combines the two most popular trips from Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong Delta, in a VIP air-conditioned limousine van. We pick you up from your hotel in Districts 1, 3 or 4 and head first to the tunnels, where your English-speaking guide shows you the hidden underground network used during the war. After lunch, we drive to My Tho, cruise the wide Tien River by motorboat to a coconut island and glide through narrow palm-lined canals in a small rowing boat. The default option is a small group of up to 10 guests; a smaller premium group and a fully private VIP tour are also available. It suits families, couples and friends who want both sights in one day.

Full Description

Cu Chi Tunnels

The Cu Chi Tunnels lie about 70 km north-west of the city centre and are one of the most important historical sites in southern Vietnam. Dug by hand from the late 1940s and greatly extended in the 1960s, the network once ran for well over 200 km beneath the forest, with several levels, hidden trapdoors, air vents disguised as termite mounds and underground kitchens whose smoke was released far away. Local fighters and villagers lived, worked and cared for the wounded down here for years.

Your guide explains how life went on underground and shows the cleverly hidden entrances, living areas and traps. Some sections have been widened so visitors can crawl through a short stretch; it is always optional. A Cu Chi Tunnels day trip from Ho Chi Minh City usually takes half a day, but on this tour we pair it with the Mekong Delta. Plan about 2 hours on site.

My Tho and the Tien River

After lunch the van heads south to My Tho, the capital of Tien Giang province and the traditional gateway to the Mekong Delta, about 2 hours from Cu Chi. Here the Mekong splits into wide branches before reaching the sea, and the Tien River is busy with cargo boats, ferries and fishing vessels. The town's riverside, fruit market and old pagodas give a first taste of delta life.

From the pier you board a motorboat for a ride across the broad brown river, passing islands covered with coconut palms and fruit orchards. The river views are a highlight of any Mekong Delta day tour from Ho Chi Minh City. The best time to visit the Mekong Delta is the dry season from December to April, although the green months of the rainy season bring lush scenery and plenty of fruit.

Coconut Island and the Palm Canals

Your motorboat lands on one of the coconut islands in the river, where families live from fruit growing, beekeeping and coconut crafts. You walk along shady lanes to a bee farm to taste honey tea with lime, and visit a small workshop where coconut milk and sugar are cooked and cut into chewy coconut sweets. Seasonal fruit such as rambutan, dragon fruit, pineapple and jackfruit is served at a garden table.

Then comes the moment most people remember: a ride in a small wooden rowing boat through a narrow canal lined with water-coconut palms, paddled by a local rower in a conical hat. The canal is quiet and shaded, and the only sounds are the oars and the birds. It is a gentle ride of around 15 minutes that suits all ages.

Southern Folk Music and Village Life

In a local garden you listen to don ca tai tu, the traditional amateur music of southern Vietnam, played on stringed instruments and sung by local musicians. This music grew up in the villages of the Mekong Delta in the late 19th century and is recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The songs speak of the river, the land and family life.

A short countryside walk then gives you a feel for rural life, past fruit gardens, small houses on stilts and canals. Your guide explains how the rhythm of the tides and seasons shapes everything from farming to markets. In the late afternoon we drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, arriving at your hotel at around 18:30 to 19:00.

Travelling by VIP Limousine Van

The long drives of this day are much easier in a VIP limousine van, a modern air-conditioned minibus with fewer, wider leather seats that recline, more legroom and space for your bags. With a maximum of 10 guests in the default option, boarding and stops are quick, and the guide can answer everyone's questions. Fruit, snacks and bottled water are provided on board, and travel insurance is included.

Many travellers ask how to get to the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Mekong in one day without a long bus journey; this tour is the answer. If you would like even more space, the premium option keeps the group to a maximum of 6 guests, while the private VIP option gives you your own vehicle and guide with door-to-door pickup anywhere in the city. You can compare all options in the booking panel.
