Hue Imperial City (the Citadel)
The Imperial City of Hue is the heart of the Hue Citadel, built from 1804 as the capital of the Nguyen dynasty, Vietnam's last ruling family, which held power until 1945. A Hue Imperial City tour takes you through the Ngo Mon Gate, across the courtyard of Thai Hoa Palace, and into the Forbidden Purple City, once reserved for the emperor and his household.
Much of the complex was damaged in the twentieth century, so the restored halls, gates and gardens sit beside quiet ruins, and your guide explains what each area was used for. Plan around two hours here. The Hai Van Pass train ride
The Hai Van Pass, whose name means Ocean Cloud Pass, is the mountain ridge that separates Da Nang from Hue. The train from Da Nang station follows the coast and the hills, passing fishing bays, forest and the long beach at Lang Co, so a Hai Van Pass train tour is as much about the view as the destination.

Thien Mu Pagoda on the Perfume River
Thien Mu Pagoda, also called the Pagoda of the Celestial Lady, has stood on a low hill above the Perfume River since 1601 and is still an active Buddhist monastery. Its seven-storey Phuoc Duyen tower, about twenty metres tall, is the unofficial symbol of Hue and one of the best photo spots in the city.
The visit takes roughly half an hour: walk the courtyards, look at the bell and the stone tortoise steles, and watch the river below. Wear covered shoulders and knees out of respect for the monks. Thien Mu Pagoda is easy to reach on this tour, which matters because it is a little outside the centre and is awkward to combine on your own.
Khai Dinh Tomb
The tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh, built between 1920 and 1931, is the most unusual royal tomb near Hue. Instead of a calm garden setting, it climbs a hillside in stone terraces, mixing Vietnamese ornament with European and Asian influences, and its interior is covered in mosaics of broken ceramic and glass.
Give it about forty-five minutes: climb the steps, look at the guardian statues in the courtyard, then step into the main hall to see the gilded throne and the ceilings. Many travellers say this tomb is the most photogenic stop of the day.
