Overview

This guided day trip from Sapporo brings together three very different sides of Hokkaido in one easy day. You join a shared group with an English-speaking guide and travel in an air-conditioned vehicle from central Sapporo. The morning starts in the forest of Maruyama at Hokkaido Shrine, the island's most important Shinto shrine. Next comes the Hill of the Buddha, where a great stone Buddha sits inside a hill planted with lavender, revealed only as you walk through a tunnel. The afternoon is free in Otaru, the old port town of canals, stone warehouses, glass workshops and music boxes. It is a good choice for travellers, couples and families who want a full day of sightseeing without driving or planning trains.

Full Description

Hokkaido Shrine in Maruyama Park

Hokkaido Shrine, or Hokkaido Jingu, was founded in 1869, the same year the modern development of Hokkaido began, and it moved to its present site at the foot of Maruyama in 1871. It honours the guardian deities of the land and its settlers, and for local families it is the place to celebrate New Year, births and other life events.

The approach leads under tall wooden torii gates through a forest of cedar, katsura and oak, where Ezo squirrels and woodpeckers are often seen. Your guide explains simple shrine etiquette: a small bow at the gate, rinsing your hands at the water basin and the quiet prayer at the hall. Allow about 45 minutes. In early May the surrounding Maruyama Park is one of the favourite cherry blossom spots in Sapporo, and in winter the snowy grounds are beautifully calm.

The Hill of the Buddha

The Hill of the Buddha, known in Japanese as Atama Daibutsu, stands in a large landscaped cemetery in the south of Sapporo. A seated stone Buddha about 13.5 metres high had stood in the open for years before a renowned Japanese architect surrounded it with a man-made hill in 2015, so that from outside only the top of the head appears above a carpet of lavender.

Visitors reach the statue through a long, softly lit concrete tunnel, and the Buddha is revealed suddenly at its end, framed by a circle of open sky. The effect is calm and moving, and the hill changes with the seasons: purple lavender in July, green in summer and pure white in winter. Admission is paid on site for visitors aged 13 and over. Hill of the Buddha opening hours are usually 9:00–16:00 from April to October and 10:00–15:00 in winter; the tour gives you about an hour here.

Otaru Canal and the old stone warehouses

In the afternoon the group drives west to Otaru, about an hour from the south of Sapporo. Otaru Canal was completed in 1923 so barges could carry goods between ships and the waterfront warehouses. When the port modernised, part was filled in, and after a long local campaign the rest was restored in the 1980s as a promenade with stone paths and gas lamps.

The grey stone warehouses, once stores for herring, grain and coal, now house cafés and shops, and their reflections on the water make the classic photo. Nearby, grand stone banks recall the time when Otaru was called the Wall Street of the North. Your guide suggests the best viewpoints and lunch spots before your free time begins; halal options in Otaru are limited, but seafood and vegetable dishes are easy to find.

Sakaimachi Street, glass and music boxes

Sakaimachi Street is a long lane of restored merchant houses full of glass studios, craft shops and sweet makers. Otaru glass began with oil lamps and the floats used by herring fishermen, and today you can watch artisans shape molten glass, try simple decorating for an extra fee, or choose handmade cups and ornaments.

At the end of the street lies Marchen Crossing with its steam clock, which plays a tune every quarter hour, and the Otaru Music Box Museum, set in a brick and timber building from 1912 and filled with music boxes of every size. During your free time in Otaru, about three hours including lunch, you can explore at your own pace before meeting the group for the drive back to Sapporo in the early evening. In February the town glows with candles during the Snow Light Path festival.
