The Perfume Pagoda, or Chua Huong, is not one building but a complex of Buddhist temples, shrines and caves built into the limestone Huong Son mountains in My Duc district, roughly 60 kilometres south-west of Hanoi. It has been a pilgrimage site for centuries, and Vietnamese families visit throughout the year to pray for luck and health. Getting there involves climbing. On the option without a cable car you walk up a steep stone path for an hour or more, passing temples on the way; on the cable car option the ride takes just a few minutes and saves your legs. Either way, bring water, wear shoes with grip and take your time on the steps down.

When to visit and the festival season

The Perfume Pagoda Festival starts in the first lunar month and runs for around three months, roughly from January to March, when hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arrive. It is a colourful time to visit but very crowded, and queues for boats and cable cars can be long.

The best time to visit the Perfume Pagoda for a quieter day is outside the festival season, from autumn to early winter or in the shoulder months.
